AbbVie is a global, research-based biopharmaceutical company formed in 2013, following separation from Abbott Laboratories. The company's mission is to use its expertise, dedicated people and unique approach to innovation to develop and market advanced therapies that address some of the world's most complex and serious diseases. Together with the recently acquired Allergan, AbbVie employs more than 47,000 people worldwide and markets medicines in more than 170 countries. At AbbVie, our vision is to be recognized as a biopharmaceutical company delivering a consistent stream of innovative medicines that solve serious health issues and have a remarkable impact on people’s lives.

To be successful, we need outstanding individuals willing to challenge themselves to find the best solutions for our patients. The AbbVie Postdoc program is one way we are doing just that.

Through our Postdoc program, we are hiring postdocs from key academic institutions for preferred areas of science in the U.S., while providing a unique opportunity for participants to build a solid career foundation in the pharmaceutical industry while building the AbbVie brand as an employer of choice for scientific talent. The program offers a balance of structured learning and work experience, with accessibility to high-level knowledge building across the drug development continuum to help participants understand how everything fits together and is put into practice. It also provides them with a chance to establish working relationships with some of the world’s most respected scientists and leaders in the industry. Participants in the Postdoc program play an integral part in our continued success and will help us to further grow as a leader in our industry. This assignment will typically be from two years and not to exceed three years in duration.

Background:

DNA-Encoded Library (DEL, DECL) technology has emerged as a powerful platform and tool for facile screening of the biological affinity of billions of compounds simultaneously. This concept of split-and-pool methodology with unique, covalently-linked DNA tags was first proposed by Brenner and Lerner in 1992 and has since been widely implemented in both academic and industrial settings to support drug discovery programs. As with any screening platform, the success of DEL screens relies heavily on the diversity and complexity of the compounds within the collection. Although much progress has been made, the main limitation of encoded library technology (ELT) is the relatively small number of solution-phase, DNA-compatible, plate-friendly chemical methodologies available for library production. Thus, there exists an imminent need for the development of these on-DNA methods to improve structural diversity and widen the chemical space coverage of DELs. This postdoctoral appointment on the DEL team and in the Centralized Organic Synthesis group at AbbVie will combine elements of modern organic synthesis with state-of-the-art drug discovery technology. Overall, the program will offer exposure to a broad range of research for the scientist and opportunities to publish in high impact journals. The contributions made to this evolving technology will drive innovation in the DEL arena, at AbbVie and in the scientific community at large. Finally, the postdoctoral researcher will benefit from carrying out cutting-edge organic synthesis research in a collaborative, innovation-rich environment, while familiarizing themselves with working in the pharmaceutical industry.

Scientific Focus:

Development of on-DNA chemical methodology for the AbbVie DEL platform. The postdoc will work closely with our COS, Early Chemistry and ACT teams to develop new on-DNA chemical methods and explore new DEL chemistry technologies. The new methods developed will be published externally and used to build up novel libraries for the AbbVie DEL platform. The fellow will use their synthetic expertise to contribute to these critical business activities, while learning the intricacies of the DEL field and interfacing with medicinal chemists, structural biologists and various other specialties within the context of early drug discovery and the DEL platform. In this role, the fellow will also have the opportunity to interact with external CRO resources.

Key Responsibilities Include:

  • Maintain a high level of productivity in the laboratory setting.
  • Demonstrate the ability to resolve key project hurdles and assumptions by effectively utilizing available information and technical expertise.
  • Proactively seek out new information in the literature and incorporate this into individual project(s) as well as the overall program.
  • Publish research in peer-reviewed journals and present work at scientific conferences. Effective writer and communicator of research.
