Novartis Gene Therapies is seeking a Scientist, Histology, to design, coordination, and execution of histology studies in support of pipeline development. A successful applicant will have prior hands-on experience in processing, sectioning, staining, and image analysis of tissues. In this position the Scientist will develop assays, implement new technologies, train associates, and author reports collaboratively.

  • Troubleshoots protocols for histological staining, performance of equipment, and improves histology workflows
  • Performs tissue processing, embedding, paraffin sectioning, cryosectioning, H&E staining, special stains, immunohistochemistry, and in situ hybridization
  • Operates automated immunostainers and whole slide scanners
  • Monitors tissue and staining quality in slides used for analysis
  • Analyzes histological staining using qualitative and quantitative methods with particular expertise in neuroanatomy
  • Follows the department's established policies and procedures of lab safety and documentation
  • Handles and disposes of specimens and chemical waste based on the laboratory's procedural manual, and ensures compliance with regulatory agencies
  • Maintains inventories of reagents, samples, and supplies necessary for the lab
  • Communicates with team members, Program Leads, Function Heads, and management regarding histology needs, incoming studies, experiment updates, and timelines
  • Authors reports and creates figure panels to summarize study findings
  • Trains research associates on lab procedures

  • Bachelor's in Biology or related scientific area with 4 years experience or Master's with 2 or PHD with 0.
  • Experience processing tissues for immunohistochemistry and immunofluorescence.
  • Experience with floating and mounted rodent sections
  • Demonstrated proficiency in histology and complex tissue analysis.
  • Experience with histological examination of neuronal tissues, whole brain slices, and brain substructure evaluation.
  • Light and confocal microscopy experience.
  • Familiarity and proficiency with imaging software for analysis.
  • Uses professional concepts and company's policies and procedures to solve a variety of problems.
  • Demonstrates potential for technical proficiency, scientific creativity, collaboration with others and independent thought.
  • Works on problems of moderate scope in which analysis of situation or data requires a review of identifiable factors.
  • Exercises judgment within defined procedures and practices to determine appropriate action.
  • Receives general instructions on routine work, detailed instructions on new assignments.

The level of this position will be based on the final candidate's qualifications.
