This position leads the Drug Delivery function of the Biomaterials Department and is responsible to develop and implement biomaterials-based drug delivery strategies to support various pharmaceutical product lines at Abbvie. The position provides scientific vision and lays out road maps to key technology innovation initiatives, both internally and in collaboration with external institutions. She/he plans and executes research and development activities of developing novel biomaterials for use in next generation sustained drug delivery products via polymer synthesis, modification, formulation, fabrication, and characterization.

Key Responsibilities

  • This position leads the Drug Delivery function of the Biomaterials Department and is responsible to develop and implement biomaterials-based drug delivery strategies to support various pharmaceutical product lines at Abbvie. The position provides scientific vision and lays out road maps to key technology innovation initiatives, both internally and in collaboration with external institutions. She/he plans and executes research and development activities of developing novel biomaterials for use in next generation sustained drug delivery products via polymer synthesis, modification, formulation, fabrication, and characterization.
  • Organizes, leads, and/or participates in project team meetings to define and schedule project activities and review completed tasks.  Communicates project status to project teams, relevant steak holders and R&D governance boards as appropriate.
  • Represent the Biomaterials group to interface with broad cross functional groups. Remain as a drug delivery subject matter expert through the entire product development life cycle. 
  • Writes, reviews and issues technical presentation, reports, memoranda and other documents for internal and external distribution.  Generates ROI’s and works closely with AbbVie patent counsel in generating IP documentation.

Qualifications
  • This position requires a Ph.D. level education in Biomaterials Science, Polymer Chemistry, Chemical engineering, Bioengineering or related fields. 10+ years of applicable experience including industrial experience is required. Work experience involving biomaterials for drug delivery systems in a CMC environment is a plus. Sound knowledge of structure-property relationships as it applies to both bulk and surface attributes of polymeric materials is essential.  Experience in one or more of the following technology areas is desirable: biomedical material synthesis, cross-linked/modified polymers, hydrogels, biodegradable polymers or vehicles, biomaterial-tissue interfaces, polymer fabrication processes, drug delivery systems, and tissue scaffolding/engineering.
  • Ability to lead a group of scientists.
  • Ability to lead scientific innovations and translate them into new product concepts and opportunities.
  • Ability to create scientific ideas and define research approaches to generate new generation of products.
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical journals and procedures and governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, documentation and procedures.
  • Ability to lead a project team and organize project activities.
  • Ability to learn and function in a controlled environment regulated by FDA GMPs and handle confidential data.
