Pacific Biosciences is seeking a talented, driven and experienced individual to join the SMRT Cell Research and Development team working on next generation devices. The candidate needs to have a passion for Pacific Biosciences technology and mission. The role requires a broad grasp of multiple areas of engineering physics and chemistry, the ability to innovate in those areas, and the ability to drive technologies into a product roadmap. Their central focus will be to lead teams for device integration, performance evaluation of novel processes and designs, and yield ramp for consumable development used in next generation DNA sequencing applications. The candidate must have an appetite for solving complex problems requiring evaluation of intangible factors and must be very comfortable in a multi-disciplinary environment. They will also be expected to handle development projects and relationships with internal stakeholders and external suppliers. In addition, candidate should have a proven track record of building and managing multiple cross-disciplinary teams.

Responsibilities:
  • Recommend and develop new device process technologies to enable the product roadmap
  • Lead teams to develop processes for nanofabrication and organic coatings, like Lithography, CMP, CVD, PVD, ALD, Etch, spin coating, wet bench dip coatings etc.
  • Develop integrated process flows that integrate unit processes across multiple modules to achieve yield and COGS targets for the device in on-shore and off-shore manufacturing settings. This will include interfacing with external suppliers across cultural and geographical boundaries via conference calls and trips to partner sites in order to assist in the development process
  • Manage teams and projects through the PLC process from development to transfer
  • Develop assays and methods to validate device functional performance for different device components with changes in materials, process, design, suppliers, etc.
  • Collaborate with various R&D teams to define appropriate integration and verification tasks for different device versions for integration and to improve design, yield and COGS
  • Determine root cause of failed device component causing system performance issues using a combination of sequencing, optical testing, and utilizing failure analysis techniques like SEM, TEM, XPS, EELS, SIMS, etc.
  • Coordinate and communicate device performance results to different stakeholders including process, system, instrument, sequencing and program core teams

Position Requirements:
  • Ph. D. or equivalent experience in Chemical Engineering, Materials Science, Electrical Engineering, Physics or related scientific and engineering disciplines.
  • 10+ years of industry experience preferably dealing with complex product development and integration into complex systems, in low and high-volume environments.
  • Experienced Leader with in-depth experience in more than one of the following areas:- consumer electronic devices, CMOS imagers, MEMS products, Bio-Medical Devices, or Microfluidic systems.
  • Manage teams through various stages of the product life cycle with a track record of designing and delivering reliable and robust products
  • Demonstrated success in building and growing strong, innovative engineering teams
  • Ability to travel 10-15% of their time once restrictions are lifted
  • Desirable: Experience in biochips and sequencing technologies
