The Scientist I, CMC-Analytical Development Gene Therapy Analytics will develop physiochemical methods designed at characterizing and/or measuring the critical quality attributes (CQAs) of cell and gene therapy products. They will be responsible for independently designing and executing laboratory experiments, compiling relevant findings into reports, and presenting results to internal and external stakeholders. A successful candidate will be comfortable working in a dynamic, cross-functional, work environment.

  • Development and support of HPLC/UPLC methods (Agilent and Thermo HPLCs/UPLCs; SEC, IEX, and RP using UV, FLR, CAD, and MALS) to measure the CQAs of cell and gene therapy products
  • Development and support of LC-MS/MS methods (Thermo Q Exactive) to characterize the nucleic acid, protein, and/or lipid components of cell and gene therapy products
  • Testing in-process, drug substance, and drug product samples using HPLC and LC-MS/MS
  • Participating in tech transfer protocols to transfer developed methods and acquired knowledge to the Quality Control team
  • Authoring and reviewing analytical test methods, data summaries, protocols, and technical reports
  • Engaging with internal and external stakeholders/customers to set strategic goals, generate workplans, and discuss findings


The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required to perform this job successfully.

  • PhD in Biochemistry, Analytical Chemistry or a related discipline (or) Masters degree in Biochemistry, Analytical Chemistry or a related discipline with 3+ years of industry experience (or) BS in Biochemistry, Analytical Chemistry or a related discipline with 5+ years of industry experience (or) equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Demonstrated ability to develop HPLC/UPLC and LC-MS/MS methods to characterize or measure the CQAs of in-process, drug substance, and drug product samples
  • Use of excellent oral and written communication skills to present findings to a broader scientific audience and to author technical documents (protocols, reports, and SOPs)
  • Success working in a dynamic, cross-functional environment

  • Experience developing methods for cell and gene therapy products
  • Experience using and maintaining Agilent and Thermo HPLCs/UPLCs and Thermo Q Exactive instruments
  • Experience with the following techniques: ELISA, gel electrophoresis, DLS, DSC, AUC, and capillary electrophoresis (CE-SDS, cLIF, cIEF)

Travel Requirements
  • This position may require up to 10 % travel

  • This is an office-based position located at the main headquarters in downtown Durham, NC.
