This role encompasses both the Site Head for the San Diego Vaccines R&D Center of Excellence and scientific lead for the San Diego laboratory-based Research and Development activities within the Vaccines Business Unit (VaxBU). The role is expected to set the strategic vision for the San Diego site in support of the VaxBU R&D strategy, as well as manage day-to-day operations, maintain a cohesive and highly functioning site leadership team, and set annual and long-term site and budget plans for the San Diego site. This role reports to Vice President of Vaccines Research and Development and will be a member of the Vaccines R&D leadership team.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Act as a member of the Vaccines Business Unit Research and Development Leadership Team with strategic responsibility to represent the San Diego laboratory-based operations supporting VaxBU R&D innovation, pipeline and candidate discovery and product development activities
  • Lead the San Diego Vaccines R&D Center of Excellence as the Site Head
    • Provide support for all San Diego R&D operations with a focus on excellence, innovation, quality, compliance, and continuous improvement
    • Develop Strategic Plan to expand San Diego site as R&D Center of Excellence
    • Communicate regularly with the San Diego team to ensure clear line of sight into enterprise-wide activities and strategy
    • Develop plans for and manage the annual site budgets to include capital expenses, operations, and overhead
    • Provide technical support to improve productivity and decrease R&D operations costs, while maintaining high levels of quality
    • Support and fulfill needs of cross-functional groups housed within the San Diego site
    • Actively drive site employee and team engagement
    • Cultivate innovation and scientific prowess amongst site staff
  • Oversee and provide leadership, technical and strategic direction for the various aspects of laboratory-based vaccines research and development activities including:
    • Interact closely with Program Leads and Project Managers to ensure site operations and work support discovery and development program objectives, timelines, budgets, and strategies. Develop operational, resource and tactical plans to meet needs across all VaxBU development programs
    • Manage a team of scientists responsible for development and characterization of vaccines in vitro, in vivo and in humans
    • Overseeing new vaccine construct design and proof-of-concept characterization; assay development/qualification/validation/tech transfer; nonclinical and clinical evaluation of immune response and efficacy of vaccines; content of regulatory submissions related to R&D operations; CRO and consulting management in support of R&D activities
  • Build and strengthen the Vaccines Research and Development core technical capabilities
    • Ensure proper staffing and resourcing. Ensure team effectiveness including setting team member expectations and providing coaching and feedback to direct reports.
    • Demonstrate strong use of core competencies with a focus on building cohesive and high performing teams, fostering resourcefulness, and engaging in healthy conflict.
    • Mentor and develop talent within Research and Development organization.
    • Provide Subject Matter Expertise to Emergent vaccine development programs
    • Represent scientific and strategic elements of the San Diego site and laboratory-based R&D operations to internal senior leadership and external clients
    • Ensure research and development activities are conducted in accordance with Emergent, federal regulations and sponsoring agency policies and procedures
    • Liaise with local and state government officials and regulatory bodies
    • Set and measure personal, employee, team and site objectives, goals, and milestones
    • Perform other duties as assigned/required

MINIMUM EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, SKILLS

• Ph.D. in Biology, Microbiology, Immunology, or related Life Sciences field
• 15+ years of related vaccine development experience, including 10+ years of progressively responsible management experience in an industrial setting.
• Experience with vaccine or related biologics product development, particularly in the design and execution of nonclinical and clinical studies.
  • Familiarity with GLPs, GMPs, and GCP requirements required.
  • Knowledge of regulatory and quality requirements for pharmaceuticals and vaccines required.
  • Experience with assay development, assay validation, process development, and pivotal animal studies highly desired.

• Proven experience in problem solving, decision making, building effective teams, mentorship, and leadership across multiple areas of expertise
• Strong interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills including track-record of scientific expertise demonstrated through peer-reviewed publications, abstracts and presentations
• Strong experience in strategic management, planning and execution.
  • Demonstrated experience in navigating complex organizational structures, setting short- and long-term priorities, work, and resource plans, and balancing multiple stakeholders (internal and cross-functional)
  • Demonstrated aptitude to evaluate overall workloads, budget, facility, equipment, and personnel resources and adjust to meet corporate goals.
  • Ability to manage multiple departments and build relationships to meet short-term and strategic goals.
