Job Details

Fate Therapeutics is seeking an experienced Corporate Controller at the Senior Director or Director level to be responsible for all aspects of the accounting close process, payroll, equity accounting and administration, financial statement preparation and SEC reporting. The Corporate Controller will work closely with the company's external and internal audit teams to refine and support an effective environment of financial reporting and controls. The successful candidate will have demonstrated the ability to design, communicate, and manage financial reporting processes including external financial statement audits and implementing internal controls. The position will promote quality and integrity of the accounting output by effectively managing all aspects of the company's accounting processes through effective communication and a positive customer service attitude. Major responsibilities include building/maintaining a cohesive and effective staff; day-to-day management of departmental staff; modifying and maintaining policies; ongoing focus towards continuous improvement and automation; and building and maintaining relationships with key internal and external stakeholders. This full-time position reports to the Chief Financial Officer and is located at our corporate headquarters in San Diego, CA.

Responsibilities:
• Continue to develop and evolve the accounting department and team with an infrastructure
that will support significant growth
• Oversee all aspects of general ledger activities and close process (accounts payable,
prepaids, accruals, fixed assets, trend reports and analysis, etc.)
• Ensure strong internal controls by building and maintaining effective processes and systems,
and coordinate and oversee Sarbanes Oxley activities in accordance with established controls
• Ensure all accounting policies and procedures are refined and in place to provide assurance that company assets are protected
• Lead monthly close of company financial statements; Ensure that the close process is performed in a timely, efficient, and accurate manner
• Responsible for all external reporting including Form 10-K/Q, Form 8-K, Form S-8, and Section 16 reporting
• Oversee equity administration process using Fidelity software (ensure proper documents, grants, activity)
• Oversee income tax return preparation and special tax analyses conducted by external advisors
• Coordinate work relating to both internal and external audits in the periodic review of the company's financial records and ensure implementation of any agreed upon recommendations, resulting from audit findings
• Coordinate check runs and wire payments with CFO and CEO
• Develop internal management reporting system to accommodate monthly internal
reporting as required by executive management
• Oversee revenue recognition journal entries
• Research accounting requirements and implications for special transactions, including technical memo's/whitepapers to support final accounting treatment
• Manage finance approval of clinical trial site budgets, with a focus on cost effective budgets that accommodate efficient accrual and payment processes
• Work closely with clinical operations and development staff on clinical trial management, from contract/site budget preparation, to payment of clinical invoices, to quarterly accounting accrual
• Manage financial communications with collaborators, including budgets, forecasts, and invoicing
• License milestone accounting and tracking, including working with third-party specialists
• Prepare quarterly audit committee materials
• Participate in negotiations/diligence for various contracts, including leases, asset purchases,
and collaborations
• Oversee iXBRL preparation associated with various SEC filings
• Track, research, and implement new accounting and SEC guidance/rules as applicable for a
publicly traded company
• Serve as 401k administrator (meet periodically with broker consultants to discuss the 401k
plan, plan investments, etc.)
• Oversee employee engagement associated with equity, payroll, and 401k questions

Qualifications
• Bachelor's in Accounting or Finance; CPA preferred
• 10+ years relevant finance and accounting experience including previous experience as a
Controller, as well as, experience in SEC/public company accounting
• Biotech/pharmaceutical industry preferred
• Strong financial systems expertise; preferably with ERP implementations
• Advanced knowledge of finance, accounting, clinical trial accruals, budgeting, tax, banking,
cash management, cost control principles, and GAAP
• Demonstrated ability in leading, managing and recruiting top talent
• Proven ability to analyze financial data and prepare financial reports, statements, and
projections
• Experience in developing and implementing financial policies, procedures, and initiative
• Ability to present and effectively communicate with senior executives and external
stakeholders complex accounting/financial outcomes in an articulate and succinct manner
• Ability to influence operational/policy changes cross functionally in a positive demeanor
• Strong project management skills
• Independent thinker, hands-on mindset, and a detail-oriented approach to getting the work
done

Working Conditions and Physical Requirements
• 100% on-site work at corporate headquarters in San Diego, CA.
• Occasional evening and weekend work as needed
