Job Details
The Discovery Technologies team is seeking to fill an Automation Engineer position at its Thousand Oaks facility. Primary responsibilities include day-to-day operation of large, integrated automation platforms, managing the platforms' schedule, and maintaining platform readiness for Amgen's Research scientists. Basic engineering skills in electrical, mechanical, and pneumatic systems will be required to troubleshoot issues and keep the system operational. The role will also collaborate with the scientists using the system to edit, develop, and run automated, experimental protocols.
Position Responsibilities
- Daily operation of robotic platform(s) & laboratory automation to execute a variety of process to include but not limited to automated microscale chemical synthesis, high-throughput assays, cell line development, and protein purification and analytics.
- Performing quality control and calibration of equipment for both accuracy & precision.
- Troubleshooting of various lab instrumentation and automation, which will require skill with electrical, mechanical, fluidic, and pneumatic systems, as well as knowledge of the software controlling the instruments and integrated systems.
- Optimizing workflows and protocols to increase throughput, improve data quality, and/or reduce consumable consumption.
- Assisting scientists to successfully develop, transfer and execute processes on the integrated platforms and ancillary equipment.
- Efficiently manage execution of both scheduled and ad-hoc maintenance of robotic platform and
associated equipment by aligning with both internal stakeholders and external vendors.
- Ensuring all tasks and responsibilities are performed according to industry-leading scientific standards & accurately documented in SOPs.
- Monitoring technological developments in the field & evaluation of new technologies
Basic Qualifications
Master's Degree
OR
Bachelor's Degree and 2 years of Engineering experience
OR
Associate's degree and 5 years of Engineering experience
OR
High school diploma/GED and 10 years of Engineering experience
Preferred Qualifications
- Master's in engineering, biomedical engineering, or a relevant field
- Experience in operating, and maintaining integrated lab automation platforms, ideally.
- Experience programming scheduling software.
- Experience running and troubleshooting lab instrumentation, including but not limited to liquid handlers, acoustic dispensers, multi-mode plate readers, compound transfer devices, etc.
- Demonstrated ability to work in teams to scale a process from a manual proof-of-concept to a fully-automated, high-capacity, high-throughput unattended operation.
