Sana Biotechnology is seeking a creative and highly motivated individual to join the gene therapy team who will help bring gene and cell therapies to patients. This individual will be responsible for advancing viral vector pipelines through investigation of critical virus-host interactions and restrictions unique to priority target cell populations, with a focus on development of mitigation strategies to maximize gene delivery. Experimentally, this individual will execute complex IND-enabling preclinical experiments using a variety of techniques while working closely with other members of the gene therapy, pharmacology, and process development teams.

  • Optimization of viral vector composition for gene delivery into priority cell types through identification of stimulatory and inhibitory host cell proteins
  • Design of experiments to mitigate the impact of inhibitory virus-host interactions and restriction factors
  • Experimental viral vector production, titration, documentation and storage
  • Staying up to date with current knowledge to enable innovation across gene delivery technologies
  • Function as an independent individual contributor while working closely with other members of the gene therapy, pharmacology, and process development teams to share and apply knowledge advancements
  • Provide mentorship to others through active engagement of team members and by leading during presentations and scientific discussions
  • Independent planning, design and execution of complex experiments using a variety of molecular and cell-based techniques including flow cytometry, qPCR, ddPCR, and other molecular and cell biology techniques
  • Reviewing and presenting data cross-functionally at department meetings and larger forums
  • Comply with standard laboratory practices and company policies, including notebook documentation and biosafety policies
  • Contribute to the overall Sana mission and culture


Basic Qualifications
  • PhD in a relevant scientific discipline with at least 2+ years of post-graduate laboratory experience in an academic or industry setting or a Masters' degree in a scientific specialty with a minimum of 5-7 years of experience and proven proficiency in independent research and independent design and execution of laboratory experiments and techniques
  • Demonstrated expertise in molecular virology and viral vector development
  • Previous experience with experimental & empirical approaches for identification and assessment of virus-host interactions.
  • Experience in assessment of viral restriction factors desirable
  • Advanced experience with characterization and assay of immune cell populations, including growth and characterization of primary immune cells using state-of-the-art techniques
  • Well versed in a wide array of laboratory molecular and cell biology techniques and experienced in their use.
  • A strong self-starter, independent thinker, with a strong attention to detail
  • Experienced with interpersonal skills and an ability to adapt communication style to interact effectively with a range of collaborators including research associates, external technical experts, cell biologists, and therapeutic project teams
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, attention to detail and data quality, and experience working on diverse collaborative teams
