The Cell Therapy Process Development Intern will work within the CMC Cell Therapy Process Development group. This program will expose participants to industry research, allowing them to closely interact with Subject Matter Experts (SMEs) and learn strategies and technologies associated with next-generation cellular therapies. The intern will assist in process development efforts for allogeneic cellular therapies by developing an understanding of our platform and performing independent research supported by a mentor. At the end of the internship the intern will present their findings to the CMC department.

This position is designed for current undergraduate junior/seniors and first-year graduate students and is a full-time internship, working 40 hours per week for approximately 12 weeks in the summer.

  • Assist in the development and improvement of allogeneic CAR and TCR T manufacturing processes
  • Assist in the design and lead the execution of small-scale unit operation optimization and robustness studies
  • Organize and analyze data from diverse bioanalytical data sources for presentation at group meetings
  • Summarize experimental data and analysis in written reports
  • Assist in the execution of full-scale process demonstration runs
  • Write and review technical documents including ELN entries, technical reports, batch records, work instructions, and SOPs
  • Assist in general operation and maintenance of the Process Development lab
  • Maintain laboratory equipment and manage consumables & reagents inventory
  • Occasional after-hours and weekend work may be required


The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required to perform this job successfully.

  • Current undergraduate junior/senior or first-year graduate student, majoring in Chemical, Biological Engineering or relevant bioscience degree
  • Basic understanding of cell biology, immunology, and engineering principles
  • Cell culture or aseptic experience in a biosafety cabinet (BSC)
  • Familiarity of Microsoft Office software suite

  • Prior academic research and/or industry experience
  • Mammalian cell culture experience
  • Use of statistical tools (JMP, Minitab, or equivalent)
  • Ability to think critically and quickly learn new skills
  • Excellent interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret scientific literature
  • Eagerness to work in a fast-paced environment is needed

  • This is a primarily office-based position associated with the main headquarters in downtown Durham, NC. For the time being, this role will be able to function remotely in accordance with company safety guidelines throughout the duration of the pandemic but is subject to change as needed.
