AbbVie has expanded its oncology hub on the West Coast, with three sites in the San Francisco Bay Area (Redwood City, South San Francisco, and Sunnyvale) focused on the discovery and development of novel oncology therapies. More than 1,000 AbbVie scientists, clinicians, and product developers with strong entrepreneurial roots work across these three sites. They combine their expertise in immuno-oncology, stem cells, and cell-signaling with their knowledge of bispecific antibodies, antibody-drug conjugates (ADCs), and covalent-inhibitor technologies to discover and develop novel cancer treatments. AbbVie is also expanding their expertise through partnering with companies leading the way in emerging biologic technologies including oncolytic virus' and CAR-T cells.

We are seeking an associate scientist to join a talented team developing purification processes for GMP application. In this hands-on laboratory position the candidate will support purification development and process scale-up activities in a collaborative and dynamic environment to help advance novel cancer therapies to human clinical studies.

Key responsibilities include:
  • Execute routine purification development operations from harvest to UF/DF operations competently and independently, and generate reliable and consistent results
  • Analyze and critique experimental results, noting significant deviations
  • Prepare small to large (200L) batches of buffer solutions following batch record recipe
  • Support pilot plant activities including preparation and execution
  • Perform routine analytical measurements using HPLC and UV-vis instrumentation
  • Record and manage multiple data sets and batch records in notebooks and excel files
  • Perform general lab maintenance including cleanliness, equipment maintenance and maintaining inventory
  • Collaborate within the team in order to follow best practices and meet project goals
  • Must be flexible to participate in innovative projects with shifting priorities and ambiguity in direction
  • Learn and understand new experimental techniques
  • Must be comfortable with physical activities of constant standing, walking, sitting and occasionally lifting up to 50Ibs
  • Provide verbal updates and presentations at group meetings
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills

Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree or Master's Degree in Biological Sciences, Chemical/Biochemical Engineering or related field with at 0-3 years relevant industry experience in purification technologies/downstream development
  • Experience with laboratory techniques including chromatography, filtration, UF/DF, tangential flow filtration, buffer exchange, aseptic liquid handling, buffer preparation, and HPLC/UPLC is desired
  • Experience with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
  • Independently generate precise, reliable, and reproducible data in a timely manner. Demonstrate experimental precision and strong data interpretation skills and should possess understanding of core discipline
