Oncology is a key therapeutic area for AbbVie, with a portfolio consisting of three marketed products - Imbruvica, Venclexta, and Empliciti - and a pipeline containing multiple promising new molecules that are being studied in nearly 200 clinical trials in 19 different types of cancer. AbbVie is expanding its oncology hub on the West Coast, with three sites in the San Francisco Bay Area (Redwood City, South San Francisco, and Sunnyvale) focused on the discovery and development of novel oncology therapies. More than 1,000 AbbVie scientists, clinicians, and product developers with strong entrepreneurial roots work across these three sites. They combine their expertise in immuno-oncology, stem cells, and cell-signaling with their knowledge of bispecific antibodies, antibody-drug conjugates (ADCs), and covalent-inhibitor technologies to discover and develop novel cancer treatments. This position is based at AbbVie's South San Francisco, CA location.

We are looking for a talented and driven Senior Scientist I/II with experience in single cell RNA sequencing, multi color flow cytometry and cell sorting. The successful candidate will use their expertise to assess target expression, intratumoral heterogeneity and treatment-induced changes in primary human cancers and in in vivo models of cancer, including patient-derived xenograft (PDX) models. This position requires excellent critical thinking and multitasking skills, as well the ability to design, execute and troubleshoot complex in vivo experiments. Above all, we are looking for a highly motivated and collaborative individual with a passion for oncology research, who enjoys working in a fast-paced and highly dynamic working environment.

  • Lead scRNAseq efforts in primary specimens and PDX models
  • Analyze primary specimens and PDX models using multi-color flow cytometry
  • Sort tumor subpopulations using FACS
  • Manage and characterize PDX bank and cell line collection
  • Perform cell-based or biochemical assays on a tight schedule
  • Design, execute and analyze research studies using PDX models
  • Report assay results to team and present regularly at group meetings
  • Work across functions (Project Team leads, In Vivo Pharmacology, Bioinformatics) to drive projects


  • PhD in cell/molecular biology and up to 2 years of relevant experience in an industry setting
  • Hands on experience in scRNAseq and FACS
  • Technical expertise in cell and molecular biology and/or cancer biology
  • Experience with mouse models of cancer, including PDX (Patient Derived Xenograft) models
  • Excellent laboratory, record keeping, data analysis, and critical thinking skills.
  • Ability to plan, execute, and troubleshoot experiments.
  • Ability to manage more than one project at any given time and to work successfully in a cross-functional and highly collaborative team environment
  • Exceptional communication, both speech and writing, to a variety of audiences
  • Excellent working knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and GraphPad Prism
