Arcus Biosciences is an exciting growth company founded on the vision of creating best-in-class cancer therapies. We are an oncology-focused biopharmaceutical company leveraging its deep cross-discipline expertise to discover highly differentiated therapies and develop a broad portfolio of novel combinations addressing significant unmet needs.

We are located in the San Francisco bay area, in the heart of the world's largest biotechnology research hub. Arcus Biosciences offers a competitive compensation and benefits package, including aggressive participation in the growth of the company in the form of stock option grants. Arcus is an ambitious undertaking, and we fully expect our company to become a force in the discovery, development and commercialization of novel therapies for the treatment of cancer. Our employees enjoy operating in an exceptionally dynamic and cooperative environment in which the “rule book” has not yet been written.

Job Summary:

We have an opening for a Scientist in a newly formed group with expertise in the development, execution, and oversight of immunohistochemistry (IHC) assays to support biomarker research for oncology therapeutic assets across all stages of clinical development. The Scientist will be responsible for the management and interpretation of established IHC assays performed on clinical samples at CROs, as well as the development and validation of new IHC assays to support Arcus's clinical pipeline. The role requires demonstrated expertise in IHC assay development, validation, and interpretation of IHC staining results. The ability to perform and supervise standard histopathology workflow in the laboratory, including tissue processing, embedding, and sectioning is desired, as well as the ability to source and procure relevant tissues and research materials. Familiarity with multiplex chromogenic and fluorescent IHC assays and quantification using digital image analysis software is highly desirable. The successful applicant will have strong communication and presentation skills and the ability to work in a highly collaborative, fast-paced environment.

Job Responsibilities:

The job duties and responsibilities for this Scientist position include, but are not limited to:

  • Performing and overseeing the performance of established IHC assays both internally and at CROs
  • Developing new IHC assays to support clinical programs and collaborating with preclinical research teams to build assays with clinical applications in mind
  • Conducting thorough IHC assay validation, including extensive specificity testing
  • Imaging and analyzing single chromogenic IHC stains as well as multiplex immunofluorescent stains using both standard scoring methods and digital image analysis software
  • Tissue procurement to support assay development needs
  • Presenting data regularly at project team meetings and communicating effectively across functional teams (pharmacodynamics, biomarker ops, biology, etc)
  • Providing supervision and mentoring to junior staff members within the Translational Science team

Qualifications:

The selected applicant will have a Ph.D. with experience in relevant life sciences disciplines and at least 3-6 years of experience, including significant time in industry. Alternatively, scientists with a BS or MS or equivalent degree with >8 years of experience, including substantial time in a fast-paced industrial environment, with an immunohistochemistry background appropriate for this position will also be considered.

Qualified applicants will have a strong working knowledge and hands-on experience with IHC techniques including automated staining platforms, brightfield and fluorescent microscopy, and image analysis methods. The ideal applicant will have experience in the development, outsourcing, and validation of clinically applicable tissue-based biomarker assays including technical oversight of vendor assay transfer and validation.
