We are currently searching for a Lab Technician to provide support to the National Heart Lung and Blood Institute (NHLBI) at the National Institutes of Health (NIH). This role is responsible for independently providing support services to satisfy the overall research and operational objectives of NHLBI. The opportunity is a full-time salaried position with MSC, and it is on-site in Rockville, MD.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Learn, maintain, and develop current lab protocols for protein expression and purification.
  • Design and clone DNA constructs.
  • Express proteins using E. coli expression systems.
  • Purify proteins using an AKTA FPLC.
  • Collect, organize, analyze, and interpret data.
  • Prepare technical reports, summaries, protocols, standard operating procedures, and inventory updates.
  • Maintain laboratory supply inventories and perform general lab maintenance and organization.
  • Troubleshoot problems with equipment or experimental techniques and develop methods to resolve these difficulties under the direction of the task leader.
  • Maintain security, record keeping, and monitoring of agents used in studies.
  • Maintain laboratory safety and update records of safety trainings.
  • Use databases for sample/reagent tracking.
  • Learn basic techniques for protein structure characterization, such as circular dichroism spectroscopy.


Required qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in Biochemistry, Biophysics, Molecular and Cell Biology, or a related field.
  • Minimum of two years of related experience.
  • Site-directed mutagenesis and DNA purification experience.
  • Protein expression and purification and experience with AKTA FPLCs preferred.
  • Knowledge of proper laboratory disposal methods and safety procedures.
  • Experience with Microsoft 365 suite required (e.g., Word, Excel, etc.).
  • Must be organized, with a strong ability to multi-task, prioritize, and be attentive to detail.
  • Must possess a high level of independent judgment and accuracy.
  • Ability to make recommendations to effectively resolve issues by using judgment that is consistent with standards, practices, policies, procedures, and regulations or law.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and an ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with colleagues.
  • Ability to work independently and reliably.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Experience with Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) spectroscopy preferred.
  • Experience with Python computer programming preferred.
