Head of Oncology Clinical Science and Chief of Staff to Head of Oncology, Foster City, CA

We are seeking a Head of Oncology Science and Chief of Staff for the Oncology Clinical Research group, reporting to the Head of Oncology (SVP). The incumbent will serve as a key business partner to the Therapeutic Area Head for Oncology and be immersed in strategic and operational elements for our global Oncology Clinical Science group, leading and driving large projects within the research group, providing insight and access to the organizational strategy and direction (around the world).

In addition, this role will be directly responsible for building, managing, and mentoring a high performance clinical science team to support clinical development programs across the oncology therapeutic areas, including interactions with research, drug safety, clinical operations, data management, biostatistics, commercial, regulatory, and other functions.

Further, in partnership with the Oncology leadership, this role will have the opportunity to focus on formulating and implementing strategies in support of potential future development work-streams, to maximize efficiency, ensure consistent high-quality clinical plans within the Oncology Science group.

The successful candidate will be a dynamic, experienced individual, with a strong track record of strategic and operational work experience, across a variety of settings and topics in the pharmaceutical or bio-pharmaceutical industry. She/he must have the proven ability to effectively manage complex and ambiguous projects, influence stakeholders without direct authority, effectively network across the organization, and communicate with senior leaders all within a very dynamic, fast-paced environment.

Core Responsibilities:
  • Design and execution of clinical development programs.
  • Through effective communication with the project teams, senior management, and external stakeholders as needed, establish clear clinical development strategies aligned with corporate goals.
  • Create, own, and drive the process, organization, and structure for Gilead's Oncology development, including both short and long-term planning.
  • Review various items and activities and provides leadership guidance and direction to ensure successful execution and completion of clinical studies and other programs: study protocols, incorporation of cross functional strategies and input into programs, external presentations etc.
  • Targeted focus on driving business results and strategic initiatives through operational rigor, collaboration and cross functional/leadership alignment.
  • Uncover areas within the Oncology Clinical Research group to drive performance and efficiency improvements to unlock productivity and accelerate execution and support project management of these initiatives.
  • Analyze existing data and industry best practices to ensure programs, processes, and initiatives are meaningful and aligned to the overall business strategy.
  • Develop and maintain detailed work plans on key initiatives which include identification of project tasks, clear milestones, and assignments of work project responsibilities, schedules, plans, resources, budget, and status reports.
  • Collaborate across multiple internal functions to manage employee, customer, partner and other appearances for the executive including prioritization of internal and external events based on impact and strategic goals, partnering on preparation and ensuring timely follow up.
  • Work closely with the Oncology Clinical Research group to partner on communications strategy and preparation/content for impactful presentations. Examples of Business Operations-driven deliverables include knowledge exchange meetings, Oncology Development Leadership meetings, Other key leadership meetings, project/initiative presentations, keynotes, all Hands presentations; follow up communications, key external collaboration meetings.
  • Curate topical discussions for leadership team meetings and drive actions / follow-up process coordinating across the Worldwide Oncology leaders.
  • Partner across the Therapeutic Area to ensure alignment and realize synergies.
  • Travel with Therapeutic Area Head as needed to customer/partner/analyst/employee meetings and events.


Capabilities & Requirements:
  • 10 + years of pharma/biotech industry experience
  • 5 + years of experience managing medical/clinical staff
  • Strong understanding of Phase I-IV drug development
  • Hands-on experience of building and shaping a development group. Has demonstrated outstanding leadership of several development projects and teams
  • Strong leadership and communication, verbal and presentation skills
  • Highly resourceful and strategic thinker with strong emotional intelligence, operational rigor and project management capabilities
  • Demonstrated consistent cross-functional collaborator, and business partner, directly contributing to teams to achieve overall objectives
  • Strong leadership and communication skills across functions and leadership teams; comfort in clinical and business development discussions.
  • Strong enterprise thinking and approach
  • International work experience preferred
  • Experience working with large teams and large oncology portfolios.
  • Depth of understanding of the function's financials; in partnership with oncology development partners, identifying initiatives to support clinical research opportunities for growth and optimization of research activities
  • Experience driving large initiatives from framing the problem, conducting research / analysis to building the business and operational plans through to driving execution to success is required
  • A proven track record establishing and achieving clear and consistent goals and objectives.
  • Self-starter who thrives in a fast-paced, collaborative, and innovative high-growth environment
  • Willingness to travel as needed (up to 30%)


Educational Requirements:
  • Ph.D., PharmD (or other advanced degree) is required
