Director, Public Affairs, U.S. COVID-19 Therapeutic Area Communications

This role will lead U.S. communications for Veklury® (remdesivir), the first FDA approved antiviral treatment against COVID-19 and support communication of future innovations from Gilead to tackle this pandemic. At this time, approximately 1 in 2 patients hospitalized with COVID-19 in the U.S. receives Veklury as part of their treatment, so accurate and effective communication on the appropriate use of Veklury is critical in contributing to our ongoing efforts to tackle the pandemic. The person in this newly created position will be responsible for proactively shaping understanding of Veklury and Gilead's commitment to COVID-19 therapeutics development. While Gilead anticipates availability of COVID-19 vaccines will help to bring much needed relief to communities around the world, effective therapeutics will continue to be a critical tool for healthcare providers to address ongoing infections.

Position Description

This role will lead U.S. communications for Veklury (remdesivir) the only FDA approved antiviral for the treatment of COVID-19 pneumonia and report to the Senior Director of Public Affairs, Global COVID-19 Therapeutic Area Communications. While COVID-19 continues to be a rapidly evolving disease area impacting the lives of so many, this individual will play a pivotal role in driving understanding of the value of Veklury in helping hospitalized patients recover more quickly from COVID-19. Given the highly visible nature of the pandemic and the continued focus across Gilead and across the media, this role will engage a broad range of external stakeholders and internal teams to support communication of our comprehensive efforts to tackle the pandemic.

Responsibilities Include:
  • Integrate information from across the organization to ensure a comprehensive narrative on Gilead's efforts can be communicated to external and internal audiences in a compelling and consistent way
  • Provide strategic and tactical counsel to U.S. focused cross-functional partners including Commercial, Medical, Government Affairs and Regulatory Affairs and Legal, and act as the Public Affairs representative on U.S. cross-functional teams and initiatives.
  • Lead data communications for Veklury and future innovations at key U.S. infectious disease congresses
  • Develop materials to support external communications, including key messages, Q&A documents, press releases, presentations, videos, social media content, etc.
  • Coordinate cross-functional efforts to horizon scan and proactively address emerging issues specific to the U.S.
  • Inform priorities and collaborate on programs related to Veklury/COVID-19 in other Public Affairs centers of expertise, including corporate communications, community engagement and corporate giving. Programs may include corporate website and intranet content development, advocacy group engagement, funding opportunity announcements, among others
  • Maintain relationships with key top-tier and trade U.S. based reporters including rapid response to inquiries to shape reporting on Veklury
  • Manage PR agency partners, providing agency teams with appropriate information and oversight to effectively implement programs in compliance with Gilead's business conduct policies
  • Manage budgets to target, ensuring appropriate investment in priority work and identifying ways to optimize resources


Knowledge, Experience and Skills:
  • BA degree in communications, liberal arts, business or science-oriented field and 12+ years of relevant experience in healthcare communications
  • Demonstrated experience driving communications plans that support business priorities
  • Expertise in media relations and issues management
  • Ability to interact with senior internal leaders, academic experts and patient advocates appropriately
  • Ability to influence others and drive alignment across diverse teams
  • A passion for engaging in public health and policy issues with an understanding of the U.S. market access environment
  • Adept at understanding scientific data. Prior experience in infectious disease communications is preferred
  • Ability to deliver formal presentations to external and internal audiences of a variety of sizes
  • Demonstrated knowledge of regulations governing communications for a publicly-traded biopharmaceutical company
