As a scientific thought-leader for AbbVie Immunology, the successful candidate will develop and execute a scientific strategy that delivers compelling opportunities to the AbbVie pipeline and ultimately breakthrough new therapies for treating immunologic diseases. This will involve driving a deep understanding of human disease biology and using this understanding to maximize the probability of success of clinical development programs. The candidate will specifically be responsible for AbbVie's Foundational Immunology organization composed of a significant number of highly dedicated, experienced immunology researchers. This organization is devoted to the selection and validation of high quality target mechanisms for drug discovery programs as well as translational strategies to enable clinical proof of concept studies in collaboration with groups across AbbVie.

The individual will leverage a global network within the Immunology research community to establish research collaborations with leading academic and biotech laboratories. He/she will align and partner with the broader AbbVie organization to provide scientific insights that advance compelling targets into the pipeline, including access to appropriate cellular and animal models, selection of optimal pharmacodynamic and predictive biomarkers, development of appropriate companion diagnostics and introduction of new technologies. He/she will advise on and share accountability for transitions across major drug discovery/development milestones. The individual will help access and evaluate the scientific merits of potential biotechnology alliances, help to extract value from AbbVie's participation in public-private consortia, and evaluate both internal pipeline and external licensing opportunities.


Skills and Expertise Requirement
  • A minimum of 15 years of post-doctoral experience in the field of Immunology.
  • A demonstrated passion to translate basic science into transformational therapies, and back-translate clinical findings into discovery programs.
  • A widely recognized reputation of innovation and ability to recognize transformational opportunities, including an exceptional publication record, demonstrated ability to obtain significant funding for innovative research proposals, influential participation in study sections, membership on editorial boards, and intellectual property generation.
  • Ability to anticipate and prioritize industry emerging scientific trends and continually develop, pioneer and implement breakthrough solutions and technology.
  • Keen understanding of state-of-the-art Immunology clinical practices, translational strategies and biomarker technologies.
  • An extensive network of connections with leading investigators in the global immunology field actively supporting open exchange of expert opinions and visions of technology.
  • Prior pharmaceutical/biotech industry experience including the advancement of innovative new approaches to early development is a plus.
  • Track record of attracting, retaining and developing talent in the academic or commercial setting.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills. Experience in interacting with executive-level management.
