4D Molecular Therapeutics, Inc. (“4DMT”) is a clinical-stage gene therapy company pioneering the development of product candidates using targeted and evolved AAV vectors. 4DMT seeks to unlock the full potential of gene therapy using its platform, Therapeutic Vector Evolution, which combines the power of directed evolution with approximately one billion synthetic capsid sequences to invent evolved vectors for use in targeted gene therapy products. The company is initially focused in three therapeutic areas: ophthalmology, cardiology, and pulmonology. The 4DMT targeted and evolved vectors are invented with the goal of being delivered through clinically routine, well-tolerated and minimally invasive routes of administration, transducing diseased cells in target tissues efficiently, having reduced immunogenicity and, where relevant, having resistance to pre-existing antibodies. 4DMT is currently conducting three clinical trials: 4D-125 is in a Phase 1/2 clinical trial for XLRP, 4D-110 is in a Phase 1 clinical trial for choroideremia and 4D-310 is in a Phase 1/2 clinical trial for Fabry disease.

We seek a talented and passionate Scientist to join our leading-edge Upstream Process Development team in designing manufacturing processes and novel AAV vectors. This person will report to the head of Upstream Process Development and interact closely with the following teams: Downstream Process Development, Analytical Development, Supply Chain and Upstream Manufacturing.

  • Lab & Experimental Activities: 65% of Time
  • Design studies that evaluate and edit mammalian cell function, leveraging methods such as
  • knock-out and knock-in
  • Isolate and evaluate adherent and suspension clonal cell lines
  • Execute and improve seed train, transfection and harvest processes with considerations towards reducing cost of goods and manufacturing
  • Develop studies that help mature process knowledge towards increasing AAV production yields, function and other quality attributes
  • Draft study designs, standard operating procedures and maintain an electronic lab notebook

  • Cross-functional & Communication: 35% of Time
  • Collaborate with process & analytical teams to screen and evaluate drug candidates across a range of indications
  • Review and present data cross-functionally at department meetings and larger forums
  • Maintain strong working relationships with the Research teams & external collaborators
  • Contribute to a culture that embraces continuous learning, improvement and innovation
  • Draft technical reports, contribute to IND sections and other regulatory documents
  • Maintains current awareness and contribute to current scientific literature

  • PhD with 0-3 years (or Master's with 5+ years) relevant experience in molecular biology, cell biology virology, or related field

  • Experience:
  • At least 3 years experience in cell culturing and experimental design

  • Skills:
  • Aseptic cell culturing is required
  • Proficiency in the culture and editing of mammalian cell lines
  • Experience in the production of viral vectors is preferred
  • Experience working with and editing plasmid sequences is a plus
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail in the lab and with record upkeep
  • Interest in developing strong communication skills, both written and oral; highlight presentation & communication of ideas in one on one discussions and team meetings
  • Ability to work independently and in a team environment
  • Working knowledge of GMP & GDP is a plus

  • Physical Requirements:
  • Adhere to 4DMT COVID protocols and policy
  • Expectation of 2-4 days per week in lab while adopting safety and social distancing practices established by 4DMT as well as the PD group
