Amgen's DH&I Data Science & Engineering (DS&E) team is seeking an experienced Sr Manager Data Sciences to advance our mission and help develop and lead a team of talented data scientists to develop and apply machine learning to better understand fundamentals of human disease, predict patient's risk for particular disease, and infer medicines that could be most efficacious for patients, along with other solutions that benefit patients.

Amgen Digital Health & Innovation (DH&I) seeks to position Amgen as the therapeutic leader of choice for patients through the discovery, development, and application of emerging digital solutions. To advance this mission, the DH&I Data Science & Engineering (DS&E) team incubates and applies digital technologies and data science across impactful problems such as predicting patients' risk for a particular disease or using data to determine the most effective treatment for individual patients with grievous illnesses. Primary Responsibilities:
  • Lead, coach, and develop mid-sized team of data scientists to analyze and apply machine learning to solve problems impacting patient outcomes across multiple therapeutic areas leveraging diverse data, ranging from genomics to clinical trials to real world evidence
  • Collaborate closely and lead efforts with Amgen business leaders to identify, understand, explore, and lead team to deliver insights and solutions for critical problems
  • Act as a thought leader in machine learning at Amgen ensuring data science team continues to apply cutting edge models both in addressing the problem at hand and eventually culminating in sustainable solutions, publications, and both internal and external presentations
  • Collaborate closely with machine learning engineering team to ensure solutions that data science team develops can be deployed and are sustainable long term
  • Lead, develop, and ensure standards, processes, and best practices for the data science team


Basic Qualifications:

Doctorate degree and 2 years of data science experience

OR

Master's degree and 6 years of data science experience

OR

Bachelor's degree and 8 years of data science experience

OR

Associate's degree and 10 years of data science experience

OR

High school diploma / GED and 12 years of data science experience

AND

2 years of managerial experience directly managing people and/or leadership experience leading teams, projects, programs or directing the allocation of resources

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Advanced degree in Computer Science, Computational Biology, Bioinformatics, Bioengineering, Informatics, Epidemiology, Health Economics, Math, Statistics, or similar field with 3+ years of experience
  • Proven experience as a Sr Data Scientist or Sr Manager Data Sciences or Sr Manager Machine Learning Engineering or similar role preferably in the healthcare industry
  • Demonstrated ability to coach and develop data science teams to apply machine learning in a business critical and cutting-edge manner
  • Extremely capable teacher of machine learning algorithms particularly in a real-world application context
  • Excellent communication skills and experience collaborating cross functionally with both technical and non-technical stakeholders
  • Record of publications or conference presentations on topics in machine learning field
  • Proven experience developing and leading data science teams to achieve industry leading solutions (as evidenced by publications, presentations, open-source contributions or Kaggle kernels by direct reports/mentees)
  • Experience leading teams leveraging diverse data sets (e.g. multi-omics to real world evidence)
  • Industry leading functional knowledge in one or more functional areas (Research, Development, Commercial Operations, Manufacturing) in the healthcare or life science industry.
