Job Summary

The Senior Director/Director, Business Development will report directly to the Chief Operating Officer and is responsible for overseeing the business development function. In this role, the candidate will lead search and evaluation of new partnerships based on Avidity's AOC platform with a primary focus on out-licensing Immunology, Immuno-oncology and Cardiology collaborations. The candidate will also lead or provide support to a variety of roles including in-licensing technologies, alliance management, competitive intelligence, early commercial assessments and financial modeling.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Lead deal negotiations as “first chair” for strategic relationships with leading biotechnology/pharmaceutical companies for a broad range of research and clinical development stage collaborations.
  • Participate in the development and execution of the partnering strategy.
  • Outline detailed project plans for partnering opportunities, including partner target lists, key activities, deliverables and timelines.
  • Create non-confidential and confidential presentations on Avidity's AOC technology platform to “pitch” potential biotechnology/pharmaceutical partners.
  • Prepare and negotiate concept papers, term sheets, issues lists, and licenses agreements to meet business development goals.
  • Attend partnering meetings, scientific/clinical conferences and search multiple sources for new collaboration opportunities.
  • Maintain close communications with prospective partners to ensure knowledge of AOC platform is current to maximize potential opportunities.
  • Organize and hosts onsite partner visits.
  • Effectively interface with all internal key stakeholders for partnership opportunities, including research, development, finance, legal/IP, regulatory and manufacturing.
  • Collaborate with R&D and finance to define scope of work plans and relevant costing of collaborative projects.
  • Develop and maintain economic models in support of proposed transactions with finance.
  • Provide effective internal communications to effectively resolve all business issues.
  • Support the launch of alliance management for each completed partnership.
  • Some travel required, including international; potentially 10-20%
  • Perform other duties as required.


Qualifications

Preferred Education and/or Experience

  • 10+ years of business development experience in biotechnology/pharmaceutical industry, which may include some alliance management experience.
  • A team player that understands collaboration is key to success in a competitive environment.
  • Proven ability to lead complex negotiations as “first chair,” including a proven track record of closing deals to drive revenue and value creation.
  • Ability to sell the technology and/or programs at all levels in the biotechnology/pharmaceutical industry (business, scientific and executive levels).
  • Experience building close relationships with various scientific and business teams.
  • Ability to evaluate and solve complex problems and the strategic implications of different business approaches.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills - ability to clearly and effectively communicate to a broad range of audiences.
  • Excellent judgment, including an ability to make decisions independently and to know when appropriate to partner with senior management for decision-making.
  • Thorough understanding of the biotechnology/pharmaceutical industry, specifically how clinical development is organized and operates.
  • Deep understanding of ADCs, technologies that target RNA and/or a thorough understanding of the market sector.
  • Self-driven, entrepreneurial personality with a drive to succeed in complicated, changing environment.

Experience/Education:
  • Requires Bachelor's degree or equivalent, may require an advanced degree (Master's), in Business, Science, Engineering or applicable field or equivalent.
  • MBA and/or additional master's degree or Ph.D. preferred
