We are actively seeking a highly qualified and motivated Senior Scientist with a strong background in synthetic biology to lead our Functional Genomics team within Genome Analysis Unit (GAU) in South San Francisco. GAU is a multi-disciplinary effort embedded into our drug discovery engine that continually uses genetic, genomic and computational tools to answer critical drug discovery questions from target inception through development.

The successful candidate will have a track record of innovative and collaborative research demonstrated through peer-reviewed publications. Primary responsibilities will include the definition of research strategy of GAU functional genomics, to design and carry out experiments in the laboratory to support projects in the drug discovery pipeline. An ability to communicate clearly and collaborate effectively with colleagues from different fields will be important.

The specific responsibilities of the candidate include but are not limited to:
  • Design, conduct, interpret and report on studies that will accelerate the discovery of new target biology and its validation in oncology, inflammation and cardiovascular disorders
  • Develop new methods using CRISPR technology to enable the broad use of genetic screening and validation
  • Ensure data generated is communicated in a concise, easy to understand manner to the appropriate teams and stakeholders
  • Monitor, review and critically interpret published work to guide internal research as it pertains to genetic perturbation
  • Be an effective, external collaborator to academic, biotechnology, and contract research organizations

Basic Qualifications

Doctorate degree with 2 years of scientific experience


Master's degree and 5 years of scientific experience


Bachelor's degree and 7 years of scientific experience

Preferred Qualifications
  • PhD in cell and molecular biology, biochemistry or relevant area with 5 years research experience (preference for industry/pharma)
  • Candidate should be a strong teammate with excellent oral and written communication skills and with a demonstrated ability to work independently to design experiments, interpret data, troubleshoot, and suggest next steps
  • Demonstrated expertise in functional genomics
  • Strong leadership skill and managerial experience of a diverse group
  • Fluency in analytic techniques vital for analyses of genetic perturbation
  • Proven record of innovative thinking to propose and champion new ideas and solve problems
  • Demonstrated ability to thrive in a team environment
