The Genomics Research Center (GRC) is a center of excellence for bioinformatics, functional genomics, human genetics, pharmacogenomics and multiple population cohorts (over 1 million genomes) and works across all R&D, and other areas such as process sciences and corporate strategy. The GRC plays an integral role towards our goal of developing world class genetics and genomics research, focusing on finding the right targets and helping us better understand not only human disease biology but also the behavior of and response to our drugs in clinical trials.

Within the GRC, the Department of Computational Biology drives research by data analysis and data integration with Discovery and Development in activities such as the identification and validation of new targets, elucidating underlying biological mechanisms for disease development and progression, translational research, and patient stratification.

We have an exciting opportunity for a Senior Scientist based in North Chicago, IL. This role involves the utilization of population scale genomic, pharmacological, and health databases to help uncover, understand, and refine potential or existing drug targets.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Devise and execute sophisticated models and analyses to extract meaningful and actionable information from the integration of various omics (e.g. genomic, transcriptomic, epigenomic, proteomic) datasets with health or pharmacological data
  • Integrate genomic evidence of drug target relevance and large databases of historical drug development with probabilistic models to guide target selection and clinical program decisions.
  • Collaborate with multiple research and clinical stakeholders across disease and therapeutic areas to maximize the impact of research
  • Manage, refine, and update large datasets including the performance of quality control steps, data harmonization and mapping, and the creation of derived phenotypes
  • Review and contribute to the establishment of relevant pipelines, workflows, and underlying methodology.
  • Communicate analytical results verbally and in writing for scientific and technical audiences.



Position will be hired based on level of experience.
  • Bachelors, Masters, or PhD in computational biology, genetics, bioinformatics, computer science, engineering, statistics, epidemiology, mathematics, or related fields with typically 12+ (BS), 10+ (MS), or 4+ (PhD) years of experience.
  • Fluency in 1 or more relevant programming languages such as R, Python, Perl, Java, or C++, and be comfortable working in a HPC Linux environment.
  • Experience with large-scale data analysis involving the integration of next generation sequencing data and health or pharmacological databases.
  • Experience with large-scale research projects involving next generation DNA sequencing data (e.g. whole exome and whole genome) as well as array-based genotype data
  • Strong background in genetic association studies (GWAS and PheWAS).
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and execute custom computational analysis plans leveraging novel algorithms and relevant databases.
  • Hands-on experience in genomics, genetic and/or epigenetic data analyses using existing and custom pipelines.
  • Strong communication skills, innate scientific curiosity and collaborative team spirit.
  • Ability to summarize analytical results and derive biological/clinical interpretation.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Working experience in biopharma industry.
  • Experience in translating genomic data into clinically relevant results.
  • Fluency with clinical trial databases and familiarity with multiple clinical, research. and heath record ontologies
