Purpose:

This position will support process safety in the R&D Active Pharmaceutical Ingredient (API) Pilot Plant and provide safety support for other R&D functional areas located in Lake County. The focus is process safety management for the API Pilot Plant and ensuring safety of day-to-day processes. Together with R&D Operations & Engineering, the Senior EHS Specialist will improve overall safety performance. This position will support projects of varying scope that encompass Process Safety Management (PHA's, MOC, hazard identification and mitigation, auditing, and incident investigation) and other EHS programs and processes.

Responsibilities:
  • Lead Process Safety activities within the R&D Pilot Plant in alignment with AbbVie internal standards and OSHA PSM. Continuous development and improvement of programs will be a major focus.
  • Responsible for Process Safety Management programs, examples include: Process Hazard Analysis (PHA), Management of Change (MOC), Pre-startup Safety Review (PSSR) and tracking closure of action items.
  • Gather Process Safety Information, assess hazards and recommend approaches that reduce employee's exposure to work hazards. Complete hazard screening of operational activities. Participate in Design Reviews and Direction Sets reviews ensuring safe practices are identified and implemented.
  • Review and revise operating procedures with Process Safety implications, working with various teams within the organization.
  • Collect process safety metrics, develop dashboard(s) and present performance indicators to business areas.
  • Provide technical support on process safety matters and site capital projects including regulatory interpretation.
  • Lead incident investigations, root cause determination and implementation of action plans.
  • Lead initiatives to support/build a culture of safety through employee engagement and participation.
  • Complete audits and inspections of areas supported. Ownership of procedures and training for Process Safety and other safety procedures and training as required.
  • Perform industrial hygiene monitoring. Provide overall safety support for other business areas as identified.

Qualifications

Qualifications:
  • Bachelors or Masters in EHS, engineering, chemistry, or related scientific discipline and typically 3-5 years of relevant experience.
  • Degree in Chemical Engineering strongly preferred .
  • 1-3 years of Process Safety experience in pharmaceutical pilot plant or process manufacturing environment preferred.
  • Ability to facilitate and lead Process Hazard Assessments preferred.
  • Ability to perform industrial hygiene monitoring.
  • Positive track record of working effectively in a team environment; plan, organize, delegate and follow-up meeting goals and objectives.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively interact with site employees at all levels. Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to research, analyze, interpret regulations/standards: OSHA, PSM, NFPA etc.
