JOB SUMMARY

EHS Assistant is responsible for the implementation and continuous improvement of the site environmental, health and safety programs and management systems.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Planning and Implementation of EHS Programs
• Conducts EHS audits and task analyses per approved Programs to identify potential EHS issues.
• Develops and executes action plans from these analyses that are designed to improve and implement the formalized safety management system, programs, procedures, and practices for the company.
• Demonstrates knowledge of the current laws pertaining to safety and environmental regulations and suggests program improvements to assist in demonstrating and maintaining compliance.
• Assists department management with implementation of action plans.

Communication, Training, and Awareness
• Periodically reviews/revises training programs and administers training as needed.
• Provides hands on consultation for departments when issues are identified.
• Prepares/disseminates monthly EHS metric reports and manages onsite safety observations.
• Maintains professional expertise through training, outside conferences and the use of experts.

Checking and Corrective Action
• Responds to employee's safety and health suggestions.
• Conducts inspections as needed.
• Investigates incidents and reports corrective recommendations.

Environmental Protection
• Develops and implements action plans designed to improve/implement the formalized environmental management system.
• Manages storage and disposal of potentially harmful agents and wastes to minimize their damage to the environment and arranging offsite removal.
• Responsible for developing and implementing waste reduction activities.
• Executes routine activities involving environmental compliance.

Other Responsibilities
• Must be able to respond to emergencies on call as needed.
• Work with and manage vendors and contractors as needed.
• Assist with the creation of documents and SOPs/BOPs as needed.
• Assist with writing Programs, Deviations, CAPAs, Change Controls, as needed.
• Must comply with all applicable rules and regulations of Emergent BioSolutions and the Pharmaceutical/Biotechnology industry. This includes FDA regulations such as cGMP, GDP, EH&S regulations, and company regulations such as the employee handbook.

Minimum Qualifications
• Ability to effectively communicate by writing policy documents, through presentations, using audiovisual technologies and the Internet.
• Computer skills including word processing, spreadsheets, databases, information management and presentation required.
• Experience with interpretation and application of federal, state and local regulations including OSHA, EPA.
• Experience with FDA, COMAR, CDC/NIH, OSHA and NIH a plus.

MINIMUM EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, SKILLS
• Bachelor's degree in Environmental Health and Safety, biology, chemistry or other science related field.
• 2-5 years environmental health and safety experience and/or 1-2 years college level chemistry and biology.
• Combined education and field experience equal to 5 years.
• Flexibility in job description is encouraged in order to facilitate maximum efficiency.
• Must have the ability to multi-task and coordinate workload by priority.
• Must be customer service and quality driven.
• Prior cGMP or cleanroom experience highly desired.
