Overview

The department of Comparative Medicine provides health surveillance, preventative disease programs and daily husbandry and care of all laboratory animals at AbbVie, Inc. In doing so, the organization helps to assure that properly trained scientists perform all animal model-based research and development conducted at AbbVie, Inc, in a humane, regulatory-compliant, scientifically sound, and socially acceptable manner. The Comparative Medicine department provides the scientific and logistical support and technical training for research scientists and their groups. The department has primary responsibility for assuring that the Animal Care and Use Program meets the standards for accreditation by the AAALAC, International and meets the regulations required for compliance with the Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals and the Animal Welfare Act (AWA).

We are seeking a highly motivated and experienced Colony/Facility Coordinator to join our Comparative Medicine-West team. The successful candidate will be responsible for the maintenance and management of the rodent animal colony, supporting the discovery and development of new therapeutics as part of a multidisciplinary research team in a fast-paced and well supported vivarium environment.
Key Responsibilities
  • Responsible for the ordering, receipt, transport, and distribution of incoming laboratory animals
  • Responsible for colony management of up to 8000 cages of mice, maintaining the organization of all ongoing mouse studies, including maintaining a census of individuals
  • Logistical responsibility over consumables, including ordering, receipt, stocking. Ensures adequate level of supplies necessary for uninterrupted functioning of the animal care areas, including the cage wash and the sterilization processes.
  • Work as part of a highly collaborative cross-functional team in an integrated and well-supported research vivarium
  • Supervise one or more Animal Care Technicians (ACTs)
  • Reviews, comprehends, and complies with all SOP's and quality assurance standard pertaining to specific area

Qualifications

Basic Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's Degree (or equivalent education) with typically 5+ years of vivarium or animal laboratory experience
  • Master's Degree (or equivalent education) with 3+ years of vivarium or animal laboratory experience.

Preferred:
  • AALAS certification at the LATg level

Required Skills
  • Possess superior planning, organizational, computer, written and verbal communication skills and the ability to network and negotiate effectively
  • Competency with software programs, including MS Excel, Powerpoint, Word
