We have an opportunity to work with our North Chicago, IL drug-discovery team dedicated to discovering innovative new treatments that make a remarkable impact by enabling people to lead longer and healthier lives. As the lead scientist for preclinical mechanistic biology research, you will play a key leadership role as part of Abbvie's Discovery Biology Team in conjunction with our partners at Calico Labs. In this position, you will lead preclinical efforts as part of a highly capable and collaborative team helping to bridge together scientists expert in bioinformatics, genomics, molecular/cellular biology, imaging, in vivo pharmacology, and clinical development to provide deep mechanistic insights for novel drug targets. You will apply your established scientific leadership and technical skills in mechanism driven drug discovery to define and implement strategies to provide solutions that will enable mechanism of action, target engagement, and pharmacodynamic approaches that advance the fundamental understanding of aging-related diseases. The successful candidate will have a strong scientific record in the biomedical research arena and will have excellent teamwork, collaborative, supervisory, and communication skills.

Responsibilities include:
  • Defining mechanistic biology/pharmacology strategy and goals for multiple collaboration projects
  • Lead efforts to develop, align, and implement MOA models/studies for collaboration projects
  • Designing, interpreting, and integrating preclinical studies to define efficacy, target engagement, PK/PD, and potential translation/biomarkers
  • Lead approaches to drive understanding of mechanistic biology for collaboration targets to inform/link pharmacology across molecular, biochemical, cellular, and in vivo models
  • Supervisory responsibility of personnel engaged in mechanistic biology studies
  • Assure communication, active contribution, and alignment with functional support areas and external collaborator(s) to drive mechanistic studies

Qualifications

Qualifications:

Position will be hired based on level of experience.
  • BS, MS or Ph.D. in Pharmacology, Cell/Molecular Biology, or related field
  • 16+ years (BS), 14+ years (MS), or 10+ (PhD) years post-graduate experience in pharmacology, cell/molecular biology, or related field
  • Demonstrated leadership in mechanistic biology research with proficiency in standard biochemical, cellular and molecular techniques
  • Recognized multidiscipline expert who drives functional performance by designing and implementing studies
  • Record of scientific achievement (i.e., strong publication and/or patent record)
  • Ability to thrive in a collaborative, matrix-based team environment and strong written and oral communication skills are essential

Preferred:
  • Previous experience in drug discovery, either in academic or industrial setting
  • Strong background in mechanistic biology/integrative pharmacology
