In the context of significant organizational transformation, Gilead seeks a VP, HR Planning and Operations. This role will lead & enable overall HR planning of key initiatives, communications, and tactical execution of operational activities, ensuring function resources are deployed efficiently, effectively, and in line with enterprise priorities. This role will also be responsible for leading a large and global organization while partnering closely with other HR leadership team members and Centers of Excellence. Focus areas include the following:

HR Strategic Planning & Program Management Office:

Works with EVP HR & HRLT to enable HR strategic plan, with assistance of Program Management Office (PMO), facilitates setting function priorities and ensures high quality, high ROI, execution of strategic priorities.

HR Operations and Employee Relations:

Leads team for HR services - Operations and Employee Relations function, taking and end-user mindset to continuously improve operational effectiveness and employee experience. Enable technology enablement and process improvement in partnership with leaders of the HR centers of excellence.

HR Communications:

Owns HR Communications, ensuring people-related initiatives and priorities are communicated effectively, considering venue, format, and audience, and collaborating with HR Change Management.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Managing a range of people services, this role will provide proactive HR leadership and consultation to key HR and business line stakeholders
  • Collaborates with EVP HR and the leadership team to set overall HR strategy in line with business and talent priorities; serves as HR Head's "right hand" on overall functional strategy
  • Leads 5 distinct Centers of Excellence (COEs) including PMO, HR Operations, People Analytics, Employee Relations, and Communications to ensure highly effective functional operations
  • Works with PMO to ensure effective resource deployment, agile capabilities, and delivery of highest HR priorities.


  • Works with HR Operations leader & team to deliver content needs & data integrity; streamlines operational efficiency
  • Works with HR Communications team to deliver strong messaging and content in support of key programs
  • Provides strong leadership to Head of Employee Relations and team to address critical employee issues
  • Provides people development & coaching, team leadership & inspiration
  • Responsible for identifying the need for HR programs or strategies to support business objectives. Participates on global HR initiatives that may require taking the lead on HR programs & projects for the broader HR organization
  • Ensures organizational success in complex business situations like acquisitions and workforce transformation
  • Consults to strategize, problem-solve, and prioritize work
  • Focuses on continuous improvement of programs, resources, and processes; focuses on operational excellence
  • Leads functional and workforce transformation
  • Leverages data and metrics to drive business insights and improvements


Experience & Leadership Capabilities

  • Leadership of HR operational functions: 15 years of experience across various COEs and/ or HR business partnership required.
  • Strong people leader; can drive results and solutions through managing others
  • Metrics-Driven/Analytical Expertise: Utilizing data-driven approaches to create "best practice" solutions. Utilizing these performance driven approaches in liaising with technical teams and product-driven leaders.
  • Business Acumen: Demonstrated understanding of the strategic, operational and financial components of broader business management,
  • Strong strategic planning and proven execution to optimize HR's solution delivery to the business
  • Global mindset: The ideal candidate will bring global experience, having led teams across regions
  • Strong operational continuous improvement track record
  • Excellent project management skills and experience; direct experience with agile ways of working
  • Must be able to exercise judgment and independently determine and take appropriate action within defined HR policies and procedures
  • Must be able to develop solutions to a wide range of highly complex problems, which require an in-depth degree of ingenuity, creativity, and innovation
  • A strategic thinker, inspiring leader, effective manager and team player
  • Demonstrate credibility, integrity, and trust
  • Lead innovation and constantly drive for results; a disruptor who thinks bigger, beyond incremental improvement
  • Industry Experience: Experience within the Pharmaceutical/Biotech industry preferred
