The department of Comparative Medicine provides health surveillance, preventative disease programs and daily husbandry and care of all laboratory animals at AbbVie, Inc. In doing so, the organization helps to assure that properly trained scientists perform all animal model-based research and development conducted at AbbVie, Inc, in a humane, regulatory-compliant, scientifically sound, and socially acceptable manner. The Comparative Medicine department provides the scientific and logistical support and technical training for research scientists and their groups. The department has primary responsibility for assuring that the Animal Care and Use Program meets the standards for accreditation by the AAALAC, International and meets the regulations required for compliance with the Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals and the Animal Welfare Act (AWA).

The primary goals of the Animal Care Technician III, in priority order, are animal husbandry, responsibility for the cage wash area, and maintenance of equipment. The Animal Care Technician III is familiar with the function of the facility and is able to help maintain the high standards that are set.
  • Monitors daily animal health and welfare while performing daily animal health observations, animal husbandry duties to maintain quality and health of research animals, to include performing daily water bottle and cage checks; provide appropriate food and water; perform cage changing and/or cage cleaning as required; record animal health concerns per SOP and/or specified protocols.
  • Assists with restraint, handling and manipulation of rodents as assigned by supervisor, e.g., intraperitoneal (IP) dosing.
  • Maintains all cage wash equipment and cage wash area
  • Reviews, comprehends, and complies with all SOP's and quality assurance standards pertaining to specific area.
  • Disposes of animal carcasses following established procedures.
  • Cage wash duties to maintain quality and health of research animals, to include autoclaving caging and water, preparing sets for incoming animals, process dirty cages
  • Monitors and records room conditions such as temperature, humidity, and lighting.
  • Strictly follows all procedures necessary to maintain animal housing, including room or facility personnel entry; personnel protective equipment use, spraying in all equipment and materials into controlled areas.
  • Operates equipment and uses supplies according to safety guidelines; performs general housekeeping and adheres to safety procedures.
  • Needs little direction from supervisor
  • Weekend and holiday work may be required
  • Overtime may be required
  • Performs other duties as assigned.


  • Education: High school diploma or equivalent
  • Experience: Two to three yearsrelated animal care and handling experience preferred.
  • Certification/Licensure: AALAS certification at the Assistant Laboratory Animal Technician level (ALAT) preferred but not required

Continuous standing for prolonged periods (more than 2 consecutive hours in an 8 hour day)
