Job Details

At Synthetic Genomics, Inc., we are dedicated to developing and commercializing genomic-driven solutions to address global challenges. In partnership with ExxonMobil, Synthetic Genomics, Inc. (SGI) is growing algae biofuels to one day power planes, propel ships and fuel trucks—ultimately offering the potential to cut emissions in half.  SGI’s research spans from isolation of novel strains, to developing genetically engineered algae strains and ultimately to cultivating acres of energy-rich algae at our state-of-the-art farm in California’s Imperial Valley.

The Microbial Discovery group is recruiting a Ph.D. level scientist to support the advanced characterization of lead algal production strains as they advance from the laboratory out to the field.  This role will contribute to efforts in planning and conducting experiments aimed at identifying and improving key biological and process constraints to maximizing lipid productivity.  We seek candidates with experience in microbial (particularly algal) physiology, microbial ecology, molecular biology, genetics, as well as varied ‘omics approaches.

Essential skills and responsibilities:

  • Contribute to a team effort aimed at the characterization of strains and their intersection with conditions experienced in a production facility.
  • Isolate, cultivate, and monitor the growth of strains employing classical microbiology techniques combined with more advanced methods (e.g. flow cytometry, molecular techniques, photophysiology)
  • Hands-on knowledge and expertise cultivating algae (non-model phototrophic eukaryotes a plus).
  • Work closely with an interdisciplinary team to design experiments, analyze data sets, summarize and communicate results.
  • Instruct and provide guidance to Research Associates and Sr. Research Associates.
  • Maintain a culture that is passionate about delivering results to further our algal biofuels program.

Preferred skills and responsibilities:

  • Relevant laboratory experience in an industrial/biotechnology setting.
  • Familiarity with modern molecular techniques (DNA/RNA isolation, PCR, gene cloning, synthetic biology, Next-Gen sequencing platforms).
  • Experience related to strain improvement through genetic engineering, directed evolution, synthetic biology, and microbiome manipulation.
  • Background in microbial ecology and environmental microbiology, including a solid understanding of microbial physiology and interactions of microbes with their environment.

Qualifications

  • Ph.D. in Phycology, Microbiology, Biotechnology, or related life sciences fields and 0-3 years of relevant postdoctoral or industrial experience.  Candidates with a master’s degree and sufficiently pertinent and demonstrable experience may also be evaluated.
  • Must possess excellent communication and interpersonal skills to facilitate interactions with a highly interdisciplinary team, including the ability to evaluate and convey results in small and large group settings.
  • Outstanding experiment design, problem-solving, and data analysis skills
  • Detail oriented with an ability to independently record scientific progress
