Specific Responsibilities:

A summer research internship is available in the Process Department at the Oceanside, CA, campus of Gilead Sciences. The candidate should be enrolled in an Undergraduate Program with a Major in Biochemistry, Biochemical/Chemical Engineering, Biotechnology or STEM discipline. The intern will have an opportunity to work in a highly regulated laboratory environment alongside scientists with expertise to gain knowledge and experience in developing and improving cell culture processes using state of art of equipment. Specific responsibilities include:
  • Primarily, executing studies and drafting tools to ensure overall success of operating the high throughput bioreactor system
  • Support experimental design, execution, and data analysis with the objective of developing and characterizing monoclonal antibody cell culture processes within a collaborative team
  • Daily operation of cell culture equipment including state of art ambr250 high throughput system, bench-scale bioreactors, and related equipment
  • Maintain accurate records lab records for data analysis
  • Present lab results at team meetings


Essential Functions:

Under general supervision, the successful candidate will perform the following functions:
  • Support the design, execution and analysis of lab experiments with the objective of cell culture process development using lab-scale bioreactors and the high throughput
  • Facilitate the routine operation of the high throughput bioreactor system by authoring SOPs and work instruction, optimizing bioreactor process control through DO/pH PID tuning, and evaluating bioreactor scale-down models to support monoclonal antibody process development
  • Document and interpret data to support cell culture process development and characterization


The successful candidate will be provided training on all major equipment and processes in the cell culture lab.

Knowledge, Experience & Skills:
  • Must be at least 18 years old
  • Enrolled in a 4-year accredited university/college; including enrollment in the Fall Semester after completing the internship
  • Undergraduate Major (or graduate student, if applicable) in Biochemistry, Biochemical/Chemical Engineering, or Biotechnology/STEM or related discipline
  • Knowledge of microbial or mammalian cell lines, cell metabolism, and protein biosynthesis
  • Knowledge of bioreactor design and operation is a plus
  • Good verbal and written communication and interpersonal skills are required
  • Ability to complete 10-12 consecutive weeks between May and September
  • Highly motivated and passionate about the biopharmaceutical industry and learning about industry technology
  • Able to work under supervision and independently
  • High degree of initiative and attention to detail
  • Able to follow applicable standard operating procedures while working in the lab environment
