Specific Responsibilities:

A summer research internship is available in the Purification Process Development group at the Oceanside, CA, campus of Gilead Sciences. The candidate should be enrolled in an Undergraduate Program with a Major in chemical/biochemical engineering, biochemistry, or related scientific discipline. The intern will evaluate and develop new purification technologies including a comparison between Protein A membrane and Protein A resins chromatography, identify top technologies and develop future implementation requirements. The opportunity will be available to evaluate a proof of concept membrane based downstream process.

Essential Functions:
  • Executes experimental plans with supervision
  • Prepare buffers, pack columns, filter samples
  • Program chromatography methods in GE unicorn and operate GE chromatography systems
  • Run analytical assays to acquire product quality data
  • Acquire and perform analysis of process performance and product quality data
  • Document experiments in Electronic lab notebook
  • Communicates findings and escalates issues to supervisor
  • Participates in department meetings and presents project progress


Knowledge, Experience & Skills:
  • Must be at least 18 years old
  • Undergraduate (or graduate student, if applicable) in the or related field enrolled in a 4-year accredited university/college; including enrollment in the Fall Semester after completing the internship
  • Good verbal communication skills and interpersonal skills are required
  • Self-motivated with strong organizational and planning skills
  • Demonstrate ability to learn new concepts/techniques quickly
  • Familiar with chemistry and engineering principles
  • Understanding of purification process development of monoclonal antibody produced in microbial or mammalian expression systems is a plus
  • Previous hands on lab experience preferred
  • Ability to complete 10-12 consecutive weeks between May and September
