Director of Bioinformatics at Jumpcode

The Director of Bioinformatics is a hands-on leadership role leading a team of bioinformatics scientists.  Supports the experimental design of both client studies and large consortium collaborations.  This role is responsible for completing data analysis projects utilizing programming, genome sciences, statistical analysis, and visualization.  Works closely with diverse, cross-functional teams including R&D, product development, marketing, and external collaborators.  Bioinformatics is involved with inventing new analytical tools and methods that will facilitate biochemical optimization of our core products and experimental technologies.

Key responsibilities

  • Anticipates and recognizes informatic challenges and make recommendations for solutions and allocation of resources needed to meet company goals.
  • Champion for approaches and builds tools that preserve scientific rigor and quality.
  • Leads experimental design regarding anticipated data needs for our customers as well as internal development projects. Helps test, troubleshoot, and improve experimental designs with the R&D to increase value to our customers.
  • Performs end-to-end analysis of project data that includes quality control, data tidying, hypothesis testing, interpretation, and subsequent graphical presentation using our own internal software toolkits as well as open-source methods.
  • Generates and presents data reports for the team, outside stakeholders, and customers that translate complex ideas into relevant and intuitive explanations.  This may include conference abstracts, manuscripts, and informatic deliverables for both grant and patent applications.
  • Maintains awareness of relevant literature, attends national meetings, and keeps up with new genomics analysis techniques and approaches.
  • Participates in establishing strategic plans and objectives. Provides high-level guidance and support to employees and other managers. Regularly interacts with executives and/or external influencers on matters effecting the organization.  .
  • Leads/manages the activities of a functional area and/or external service providers.   Ensures smooth functioning of bioinformatics team while maximizing capabilities of each member.

The ideal background for success

  • Typically requires a minimum of 12 years of related experience including at least 5 years of  successful leadership experience and a Bachelor's and/or Master's degree, or preferably a Ph.D. in Bioinformatics, Computational Biology, Statistics, Biological Sciences, Cancer Biology, Genetics, Genomics, Computer Science, Physics, or equivalent combination of education and experience. 
  • Proven track record of proven contributions demonstrated by highly cited publications, impactful tools, products, or data sets used by the scientific community, presentations at international conferences, and awards.
  • Solid understanding of next generation sequencing, genomics technologies and applications, ability to broaden knowledge to adjacent products
  • Deep understanding of bioinformatics tools, including modern statistical and machine learning tools for analysis of genomics datasets.
  • Be able to work with any one of the popular cloud environments (AWS, GCP, Azure), containerization technologies, common workflow languages and tools, as well as data tidying and data storage best-practices.
  • Demonstrated expertise in at least one programming language (R, Python, Go, C++).
  • Proficiency in Linux environment, version control tools, and reproducible research practices.
  • CRISPR guide design a plus, but not required.
  • Exceptional communication skills with the ability to collaborate, seek constructive feedback, build relationships, promote teamwork, and remain flexible and open-minded. Able to quickly adapt to change.
