Specific Responsibilities:

A summer research internship is available in the Department at the Foster City, CA, campus of Gilead Sciences. The candidate should be enrolled in an Undergraduate or Masters Program with a Major in a highly quantitative field (ex. statistics, systems biology, physics, bioinformatics, biostatistics, computer science, data science, etc). Scientific background would be a plus. The candidate will work with a group of talented data science/ bioinformatics/statistics/biomarker scientists to help develop and apply computational tools for research. A key focus for this position is to analyse a broad range of data including high-dimensional flow cytometry, single cell RNAseq and proteomic data to help understand how both hepatitis B virus (HBV) and the immune system respond to our treatments. We utilize cutting edge viral and host biomarker assays to determine the appropriate patient populations to treat as well as to understand how our treatment impact the disease. This research also helps us to develop next generation therapeutics for the treatment of people living with HBV.

Essential Functions:

Under general supervision, you will collaborate with data/bioinformatics/biomarker scientists to build analytical tools for cell phenotyping and multi-omics data sets (ex. bulk RNA-seq, single cell sequencing, spatial transcriptomics, proteomics) to catalyse biomarker discovery and strategic initiatives. In addition, you will help analyse pre-clinical and clinical data and communicate findings to scientists at Gilead.

Knowledge, Experience & Skills:
  • Must be at least 18 years old
  • Undergraduate (or graduate student, if applicable) enrolled in a 4-year accredited university/college
  • Good verbal communication skills and interpersonal skills are required
  • Ability to complete 10-12 consecutive weeks between May and September
  • Basic knowledge in biostatistics, molecular biology, and/or computer sciences
  • Demonstrated knowledge in statistics and programming languages such as Python and/or R
  • Knowledge of data analysis process, graphing and technologies (ex. Jupyter Notebook, seaborn, matplotlib, tableau, spotfire, shiny, excel, prism, etc.)
  • Ability to conceive, implement and iterate on statistical methods in an applied setting
  • A plus if the candidate has experience in Machine Learning
  • A plus if the candidate has experience working in a Linux environment
  • A plus if the candidate has experience in experimentation, or knowledge of next generation technologies (ex. RNAseq, ATAC-seq, high content screening, multi-omics approaches, etc.)
