As BTS Associate Director of Engineering Systems you drive and manage the department portfolio of digital business systems with focus on three key areas:
  1. People Leadership: You have a passion for coaching and building teams of innovators with strong business acumen, knowledge, digital dexterity, cross-system expertise, curiosity, and aptitude for new technology. You drive data literacy as a key competency in teams, treating information and data as a strategic asset. You create an environment of network-driven development and experimental learning. You shift organizational structure as necessary to meet the demands of our annual portfolio while treating each team member as a leader.
  2. Business Systems Product Ownership: You build and support business solutions that are enabling operational excellence in manufacturing, data driven decision making, smart manufacturing, smart maintenance, digitalization of manufacturing assets, cross-site technology consolidation, and ease of transfer of technology between sites per line of business. You and your team are responsible for defining the business, financial, and operational requirements for a portfolio of new and existing systems in alignment with digital transformation/Industry 4.0 strategy for the space. You have a strong collaborative approach that builds and enables well performing teams that evaluate, plan, design, develop, and deploy new and existing technologies while empowering teams to find new ways to meet and exceed business expectations. You are passionate, strong, and able to defend and justify business use cases to senior leadership and fluently articulate business value.
  3. Relationships Management: You have a flourishing relationship with key clients from Global Engineering and Automation, Site Engineering, Operational Excellence, Global Strategy, Central Services, Site BTS, and Regional BTS Directors. You are an ambassador to BTS that understands and supports agendas of key partners: Operations BTS functions, BTS Central Services, Infrastructure Operations, Infosec, Application COE (especially SAP, TIBCO, Managed Services Partners), site BTS, and Automation. You bring people together and build teams that cross boundaries of reporting structure, functional areas, and hierarchies that are vendor/service provider-agnostic. You know how to negotiate outcomes that will produce a win-win in most situations and display high emotional intelligence adapting your style to others. You can be persuasive and empathic when needed and represent a strong point of view to influence course of action. You seek to learn about others and to continuously improve yourself, your team, and those around you. You are a connector and promote mutual agendas, strategy alignment, and future investments in people, process, data, governance, and technology.

Major Responsibilities:
  • System Product Owner: Ownership of multiple business systems and responsibility for system lifecycle. Create and own product roadmaps that drive digital transformation, with inputs from business value drivers, vendor roadmap, industry benchmarking, and alignment to MES technical strategy. Build strong vendor relationships and influence vendor roadmap to anticipate and meet the future needs of AbbVie business. Continuously evaluate new products, determine alternative delivery mechanisms, understand industry best practice, and stay ahead of business and technology trends.
  • Product Planning: Owner of the Long-Range Plan and Capital Plan for business systems in the department scope. Responsible for development and justification of business cases, intake, and continuous shift of strategic direction.
  • Project Portfolio Execution: Compile scope, key requirements, and business benefits for strategic initiatives and programs. Challenge teams to quantify business benefits. Ensure appropriate staffing and negotiate participation from key partners and groups on projects. Establish regular governance and steer a fleet of programs and projects to execute with agility, to deliver quality product within aggressive timelines and within budget.
  • Champions Team Agility: Be a partner to the project execution teams. Stay engaged, offer help, and promote transparency in status reporting. Find ways to help teams mitigate risks and resolve issues quickly. Empower teams to be decision makers and promote techniques that enable quick pro/con analysis. Pivot from a strategic to tactical approach steering projects that are at risk.
  • Department: Responsible for department operating model and staff. Oversee and control department budget and project RCEs. Develop, monitor, and meet Expense and Recovery Plans. Continually look for opportunities for cost avoidance and reductions. Manage IT investments for multiple functions and partner with Purchasing and other areas to negotiates with vendors. Negotiate, secure, oversee, and ensure that resources are available to meet the long-range operational demands of the business area.
  • Business Relationship Manager: Align to key clients in business and BTS including: Global Engineering and Automation, Site Engineering, Operational Excellence, Global Strategy, Central Services, Site BTS, and Regional BTS Directors. Ambassador of BTS partners: Operations BTS functions, BTS Central Services, Infrastructure Operations, Infosec, Application COE (especially SAP, TIBCO, Managed Services Partners), and site BTS and Automation.
  • Innovator: Champion of change and innovation inspiring creativity in others and building mindset of continuous improvement. Execute and support manufacturing digital transformation strategy.
  • Quality Mindset: Participate in setting policies and procedures. Identify the impact of any relevant statutory, internal, or external regulations on the organization's use of information technology. Operate with a quality mindset while balancing quality and agility.
  • BTS Organization: Operate with broad goals and objectives. Make decisions that impact the division. Make strategic decisions that impact the corporation. Take accountability for actions taken and decisions made, both by self and subordinates. Understand corporate goals and strategies, Enterprise IT strategy, and align the department IT strategy as applicable. Responsible for compliance with applicable Corporate and Divisional policies and procedures
  • Community Manager: Develop and expand internal Social Media presence. Engage with clients and partners via internal Social Media tools. Promote department objectives and form community of practices. Bring and promote positive attitude and enthusiasm to daily work.


  • Bachelor's Degree
  • 9 years of related work experience with a strong understanding of functional area, with variety of IT roles including technical, application development, business systems, and data management.
  • At least 3 years managing projects. Exposure to a wide variety of technologies and applications.
  • At least 2 years of people management experience.
  • Can explain and present complex technical ideas to both technical and non-technical audiences at all levels of organization. Broad and deep IT knowledge coupled with business process knowledge.
  • Able to understand and communicate potential impact of emerging technologies on organizations and individuals and can analyze the risks of using or not using such technologies.
