The Lab Manager is responsible for the overall daily operations in Sana's South San Francisco (SSF) laboratories, including lab supply inventory, equipment maintenance, and waste collection/disposal. He/she will be a critical point of contact for lab users, fielding service requests and execute or assign tasks to others as appropriate, and a key member of the SSF Lab & Facility Operations team, developing scalable service models to meet the needs of diverse laboratories and teams.


Execute upon the SSF operations strategy, in addition to contributing to the cross-site strategy as a member of the Laboratory & Facilities Operations team, for the following operations. For each of the following, the incumbent will also develop appropriate communication paths and identify and prioritize areas for improvement and cost efficiency:
  • Laboratory Operations :
    • Lead the SSF site Lab Operations forum to enable clear communication with lab users and solid cross-functional decision-making regarding lab supplies, lab space planning, equipment utilization, waste stream management.
  • Lab Supply Inventory Management: In partnership with Purchasing and Supply Chain, develop systems for maintaining appropriate levels of consumable stock inventory in common supply locations in kitchen, offices, and labs
    • Represent SSF lab operations as lab supply management systems are established across Sana sites.
    • Work with lab users customers and Purchasing to develop a catalog of regularly lab stocked supplies and stock maintenance strategy for all items.
    • Ensure that shipments are reconciled with purchase orders, accurately entered into ERP systems, and delivered to correct personnel or stock locations.
    • Identify and implement improvements to stock management and receiving, including, but not limited to min/max levels, forecasting, and support from vendors.
    • Serve as Sana representative for vendor-managed supplies.
  • Equipment Management: Provide support for a diverse portfolio of laboratory equipment, including flow cytometers, microscopes, histology equipment, and PCR instrumentation.
    • Develop standard operating procedures to ensure that lab equipment and instrumentation are in good repair and kept current with respect to cleaning, preventive maintenance, calibration, and inspection, coordinating with lab users, Facilities Specialist, and external service providers.
    • Provide support for equipment selection/placement and onboarding/offboarding plans with an eye toward efficient utilization of all assets.
    • Ensure that equipment management systems are kept current with respect to inventory, maintenance status, and utilization.
    • Lead periodic pipette calibration activities, scheduling with lab users and partnering with internal or external resources for execution of calibration.
    • Coordinate and manage communication of equipment repair/maintenance activities and schedules between lab users, Facilities Specialist, and external vendors.
  • EHS Engagement:
    • Serve as representative on site Safety Committee(s), contributing to risk assessment, mitigation plans, policy creation and implementation.
    • Partner with EHS to develop waste collection and disposal procedures to meet evolving needs.
    • Manage contracts with external service providers for chemical and biological waste.
    • Maintain medical waste records as required by Sana's Medical Waste Program

  • At least 7 years of related, demonstrated laboratory operations experience managing and scaling lab operations in a biotechnology or pharmaceutical research environment
  • Demonstrated highly effective communication and organization skills
  • Proven collaborative and teamwork skills and experience in a fast-paced environment
  • Must be a creative and proactive problem solver; keen ability to anticipate needs in a lab environment, solving problems with sound judgment
  • Experience managing and prioritizing inputs from diverse stakeholders to deploy a plan that meets the needs of the business
  • Ability to work independently
