AbbVie Global Biologics and Virology Research is an integrated, global discovery organization responsible for anti-viral drug research across indications including HIV AIDS, Hepatitis C, and emerging viral syndromes. Our scope includes the discovery of innovative small molecule and biologic medicines from the early exploratory stage and their support through clinical development. We are growing a world-class team of scientists and leaders who will drive the discovery and advancement of innovative anti-viral and biologic-based therapies. Careers in AbbVie Global Biologics and Virology provide unique opportunities to work with cross-functional teams that drive exceptional science and deliver innovative medicines to patients. We are looking for diverse candidates with strong scientific and leadership experience to join the team and can offer exciting and rewarding career opportunities for these candidates.

The Global Protein Sciences (GPS) group at AbbVie is seeking an experienced protein expression scientist to join a fast paced, high throughput, large scale mammalian expression group. The GPS mammalian expression group supports medium to large scale (2 to 100L) expression of antibodies and therapeutic biologics in support of AbbVie's worldwide drug discovery efforts.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Expression of antibodies, bi-specifics, and other novel biologics formats to support therapeutic area drug discovery projects.
  • Mammalian cell culturing, including cryopreservation.
  • Transient protein expression in HEK and CHO cells.
  • Protein expression from stable CHO pools, cell lines, and hybridomas.
  • Process development and optimization for batch and fed-batch Wave bioreactor and shake flask expressions of transient and stable cell lines.
  • Purification and biophysical characterization of analytical scale expression samples, including analytical HPLC.
  • Work independently on the design, execution, and interpretation of experimental results.
  • Analyze, document, and report data concisely and rigorously.

Position will be hired based on level of experience.

  • Bachelors or Masters in biology, chemistry, biochemistry or related field with typically 5-7+ (BS) or 2-5+ (MS) years of experience.
  • Hands-on experience with cell culture and transient protein expression in HEK and/or CHO cells.
  • Prior experience with maintenance and expression of stable CHO and hybridoma cell lines.
  • Prior experience in mammalian expression using Wave bioreactors highly desirable.
  • Experience in process development and process optimization.
  • Proficiency in overcoming problems (i.e. low expression, aggregation, glycosylation) with challenging therapeutic proteins.
