Precision BioSciences is searching for a highly collaborative cell/molecular biologist with expertise in neurobiology (alt: neuromuscular biology; neuroscience) to join our Therapeutic Discovery team based in Durham, NC. The team is expanding its therapeutic portfolio with the development of treatments for specific neurological disorders using Precisions proprietary ARCUS gene editing platform. The ideal candidate for this Scientist position should have a strong background in the pre-clinical in vitro and in vivo biology that covers neurodegenerative and neuromuscular diseases. The successful candidate will join a team charged with the design, execution and analysis of experiments to advance gene-editing programs. The Scientist II/III should also be current in the pertinent literature and possess excellent communication and interpersonal skills that enable effective communication with project teams.

  • Design and implementation of cell-based models and assays (mammalian cell lines, primary cell culture, induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs) etc.) for the molecular screening and functional characterization of ARCUS nucleases
  • Design in vivo experiments to validate ARCUS nucleases for gene editing programs, including processing tissues for histology and analysis by microscopy.
  • Develop and run PCR-based assays (qPCR, RT-qPCR, ddPCR, etc.) with high sensitivity and reproducibility
  • Support the development and optimization of ARCUS nuclease delivery platforms (e.g., AAV, lipid nanoparticles (LNPs), etc.)
  • Identify and engage, as required, external CROs for molecular biology support, plasmid/viral vector production and bioanalytical assays for animal studies
  • Responsible and accountable for the execution of experiments and coordination with CROs to perform analytical and bioassays on test materials for projects.
  • Present experimental designs and results to various audiences at project meetings and department meetings
  • Maintain organized and detailed electronic records to support internal documentation needs and regulatory submissions
  • Ability to multitask and contribute to multiple projects under demanding timelines

Qualifications

  • PhD in cellular & molecular biology/neuroscience with 2-5+ years related academic or industry experience and/or training
  • Experience with management of projects in a matrixed organizational structure and/or management of small research teams is a plus
  • Preference given to candidates with in-depth knowledge and experience with cell culture and cell-based assays involving neuronal cells, satellite cells, iPSCs and relevant end points, including proliferation, cytotoxicity, and differentiation markers
  • Experience with animal models of neurodegenerative and/or neuromuscular diseases is preferred
  • Experience and knowledge of molecular biology techniques is desired, including: PCR, restriction digestion & cloning, primer design, plasmid isolation and analysis, bacterial transformation and screening, extraction of genomic DNA, DNA sequencing and analysis, and proficiency with accompanying data analysis software
  • Familiarity and experience with protein engineering, gene editing, AAV biology a plus.
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret common scientific journals. Ability to define problems, collect and analyze data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Should have knowledge of Microsoft Office software suite
  • Ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from customers, regulatory agencies, or members of the business community
  • Ability to apply advanced mathematical concepts such as exponents, logarithms, quadratic equations, and permutations
  • Ability to apply mathematical operations to such tasks as frequency distribution, determination of test reliability and validity, analysis
