Within Global Development at Amgen we are committed to excellence in clinical trial design and operational execution to enable us to bring more medicines to more patients more quickly. We recently developed new capabilities to support this effort, and we are looking for an undergrad intern to play a key role in enhancing these capabilities.

The Operational Design Team in Global Clinical Program Management has recently implemented a new role to support the design and operational planning of our clinical trial protocols. The Operational Design Analyst (ODA) is a role that helps study teams to curate and interrogate data in a consistent and efficient manner and provide data-driven enrollment projections at the indication, study and country level. The ODA works with product and study teams during trial design, planning and study start-up to drive the use of data sources at Amgen to inform program strategy and the operational design of clinical trials at Amgen. The intern will be supporting the ODAs with process automation and report enhancements and will gain true insight into how to use data to inform strategic planning.

Project Description

The intern in the Operational Design Team will provide process automation for activities related to the use of a clinical trial enrollment modelling tool and will manage the modifications to a Spotfire report to further enhance available insights for local feasibility representatives. The project will include requirements gathering, Spotfire and R or Python development, and user-acceptance testing.

Responsibilities
  • Support the Operational Design Analysts in their work to bring data to teams to help inform program strategy and operational design of clinical trials.
  • Use R or Python to transform datasets into structured formats that enable upload into geo-modelling tool
  • Collaborate with cross functional partners to translate enhancement requests for a Spotfire report into design requirements
  • Create readable and insightful data visualizations in Spotfire based on end user requirements
  • Conduct user-acceptance testing for automated solutions
  • Participate in the Operational Design Team meetings to gain exposure to projects and processes related to study design

Basic Qualifications
  • Amgen requires that all individuals applying for an undergraduate internship or an undergraduate co-op assignment at Amgen must meet the following criteria:
  • 18 years or older
  • Currently enrolled in a full time Bachelor's Degree program from an accredited college or university with a 3.0 minimum GPA or equivalent
  • Completion of one year of study from an accredited college or university prior to the internship commencing
  • Enrolled in a full time Bachelor's degree program following the potential internship or co-op assignment with an accredited college or university
  • Must not be employed at the time the internship starts
  • Possess U.S. citizenship, permanent legal residence, or unrestricted work authorization in the U.S.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Pursuing a Bachelor's degree with a concentration in Data Science/Analytics or Computer Science/Programming
  • Some coursework in Life Sciences or familiarity with drug development and/or clinical trial processes
  • Experience with database development and/or maintenance
  • Ability to program in R or Python
  • Experience with data visualization tools (Spotfire preferred)
  • Ability to pull and summarize data from data sources
  • Junior standing with graduation in Summer 2022
  • Excellent oral/written communication skills and interpersonal skills
  • Excellent time management, decision-making and organizational skills
  • Ability to apply research findings, capture information, interpret and analyze results, develop and implement a logical and strategic plan of action
  • Ability to make supportable recommendations to help achieve department goals
  • Strong project management skills, proficiency in logistic planning from beginning to end, priority setting, timely delivery of results, and multi-tasking
  • Ability to think critically, actively anticipate problems and propose solutions and to work effectively/collaboratively across teams, levels of management, across partnerships, and enable cross-functional collaborations
  • Ability to work independently and with ambiguity
  • Strong computer skills; strong technical use of Microsoft Suite
