A summer internship is available in the Manufacturing Department at the San Dimas, CA, campus of Gilead Sciences. The candidate should be enrolled in an Undergraduate Program with a preferred discipline in science, engineering, lean manufacturing, operations research, or similar.

Specific Responsibilities:
  • Supporting and executing manufacturing activities and projects related to manufacturing production and scheduling, lean six sigma, and continuous improvement.
  • Safety and Compliance are the two primary objectives of manufacturing operations.
  • Good Documentation Practices, timely communication of incidents and/or safety concerns and all relevant housekeeping duties to ensure the work areas are kept to a high level of cleanliness and inspection readiness.

Essential Functions:
  • Works in conjunction with manufacturing technicians under the guidance of a Team Leader.
  • Assist with tracking equipment and process issues, planning and execution of equipment service requests and purchase requests
  • Assist with tracking and trending data for manufacturing production cycle times, Right-First-Time, and Just-In-Time inventory
  • Organize production supplies and equipment applying 5S principles
  • Follows established Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), Master Batch Records (MBR's) and cGMPs.
  • May assist with authoring and/or updating SOP's and MBR's.
  • Sets up and operates equipment in classified clean room environment and completes all required paperwork using Good Documentation Practices (GDPs) in a timely and accurate manner.
  • Interacts with scientists, engineers, and production staff.
  • Ensure that work is performed in accordance with quality standards and SOPs.


Knowledge, Experience & Skills:
  • Undergraduate (or graduate student, if applicable) in the discipline of science, engineering, lean manufacturing, operations research, or related field enrolled in a 4-year accredited university/college; including enrollment in the Fall Semester after completing the internship
  • Ability to complete 10-12 consecutive weeks between May and September
  • Good verbal communication skills and interpersonal skills are required
  • Demonstrated ability and willingness to act both independently as well as with a team
  • Good problem solving skills
  • Can thrive working with minimal oversight, resilient through challenges, and proactively seeks to improve life for the people they work with
  • Ideal candidate will learn from mistakes, implement improvements, respectful to all colleagues, good team player, takes criticism and applies it, transparent, and strong desire to beat expectations
  • Consistent positive attitude and demonstrated ability to learn new skills
  • Exhibits accountability, including taking ownership for words and actions and fulfilling commitments responsively
  • Background or understanding of Lean concepts (Kaizen, 5S, KanBan) desired
  • Background or understanding of established safety practices and standards desired
  • Able to lift equipment up to 25 lbs.
  • Must be at least 18 years old
