Specific Responsibilities:

A summer research internship is available in the Biologics Technical and Manufacturing Operations Department at Oceanside, CA, campus of Gilead Sciences. The candidate should be enrolled in an Undergraduate Program with a Major in in Chemical/Biochemical Engineering, Statistics, or related major. The specific responsibilities include:
  • Collect and distinguish process data and offline data from SQL database, DeltaV server, and offline datasheets
  • Import data into SIMCA and generate a process model based on "golden batches"
  • Refine and validate the process model with additional batches
  • Analyze "failed batches" in SIMCA using the established process model to evaluate process anomaly detection and root-cause analysis functionalities
  • Perform a qualitative comparison with other commercially available MVDA software
  • Propose integration of established process models for in-process monitoring using SIMCA online
  • Identify any data gaps in established process models
  • Complete a project summary report and give a technical presentation to Gilead Biologics
  • Candidate may learn and perform basic cell culture procedures under general supervision

Essential Functions:

Under general supervision, the intern will evaluate technical feasibility of using SIMCA to detect process anomalies in upstream operations using B400 historical manufacturing data. The multivariate process models will be established and refined using process data from historical "golden batches" with expected titer and product quality profile. Process data from the "failed batches" with low titer or poor product quality will then be compared with the multivariate models to demonstrate early detection of process anomalies and root-cause analysis functionalities. Other commercially available software, such as JMP, Unscrambler, Spotfire, etc., will also be assessed through literature search, technical conversations with vendors, internal expertise and prior knowledge. Real-time in-process monitoring using SIMA Online will also be explored if multivariate models can demonstrate clear benefits and will include the integration with PI data management and work flow. Any process data gaps and additional data requirement for the generation of more accurate multivariate models will similarly be analyzed and defined.

Knowledge, Experience & Skills:
  • Must be at least 18 years old
  • Undergraduate (or graduate student, if applicable) in the or related field enrolled in a 4-year accredited university/college; including enrollment in the Fall Semester after completing the internship
  • Ideal candidate would have completed 2 years of their undergrad studies in Chemical/Biochemical Engineering, Statistics, or related major
  • In good academic standing within their program and the university
  • Good verbal communication skills and interpersonal skills are required
  • Ability to complete 10-12 consecutive weeks between May and September
  • Knowledge of basic cell culture and general engineering principles
  • Proven track record of teamwork, adaptability, problem-solving skills, innovation, initiative, and integrity
  • Strong interest in data management and data analysis tools and workflow
  • Knowledge of statistical data analysis, such as database set-up, data processing, data modeling and simulation is a plus
