A summer research internship is available in the Bioanalytical Chemistry group of the Department of Clinical Pharmacology at the Foster City, CA, campus of Gilead Sciences. The candidate should be enrolled in a graduate or undergraduate program with a Major in Chemistry, Biochemistry, or Pharmacology. The overall goal of the position is co-authorship of a scientific paper that describes a key bioanalytical method used for quantifying a developmental drug in human blood or plasma, based on review and understanding of existing in-house information and the scientific literature.

Essential Functions:
  • Assume responsibility, under general supervision, for your assigned project and see it through completion.
  • Become familiarized quickly with the Bioanalytical Chemistry and Clinical Pharmacology work environment, and understand and experience the interaction between the Bioanalytical and the Clinical Pharmacology groups.
  • Become sufficiently familiar with a variety of analytical techniques and methodologies and their application to biological matrices (plasma, blood, etc) to discuss them with group members.
  • Make scientific presentations (with supervisor assistance) by applying on-the-job learning and other experience in biological samples sample preparation, sample analysis, LC-MS/MS (liquid chromatography- with detection by mass spectrometry) instrumentation, data acquisition, and data analysis.
  • Co-author a scientific paper that describes a key bioanalytical method used for quantifying a developmental drug in human blood or plasma is envisioned, based on review and understanding of existing in-house information and the scientific literature.
  • Participate in meetings with bioanalytical CROs that conduct bioanalytical method development and validation and sample analysis, as well as organize and assist in analysis and interpretation of CRO results.
  • Meet regularly as agreed with supervisor and discuss progress.
  • Knowledge, Experience & Skills:
  • Must be at least 18 years old.
  • Must be enrolled in, or accepted to, an academic program pursuing a PhD or PharmD, or equivalent relevant research experience, and be returning to school the semester after completing the internship.
  • A minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 is required.
  • Pursuing a PhD/PharmD degree in one of the following disciplines: chemistry, biology, biochemistry, pharmacology or any other related sciences major.
  • Hands-on experience in LC-MS preferred.
  • Ability to search, read and review scientific literature.
  • Adequate facility with English to write scientific reports.
  • Strong computer skills for data analysis and data presentation (Excel, Word, Powerpoint, Endnote, Chemdraw, Graphpad,etc.).
  • Good verbal communication skills and interpersonal skills are required
  • Ability to complete 10-12 consecutive weeks between May and September
