Senior Director, Investor Relations


Pacific Biosciences of California, Inc. (NASDAQ: PACB) is helping scientists forge a better understanding of biology by providing a unique long-read sequencing technology that generates more complete and accurate data, giving them more insights. The Senior Director, Investor Relations, a key leadership position, will develop and implement our investor relations strategy and program. Reporting to our CFO and partnering with our CEO and executive team, this person will have overall responsibility for the strategic planning and ongoing development of all investor relations activities with the aim of increasing shareholder value and enhancing Pacific Biosciences’ image within the investment community.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Partnering with the CEO and CFO, enhance and drive forward a strategic investor relations plan and strategy to effectively convey Pacific Biosciences’ story to both the sell-side and buy-side
  • Create targeting strategy for prospective investors; establish close relationships with key investors and analysts
  • Establish process and systems to build a well-regarded investor relations function
  • Keep abreast of industry trends and competitive landscape to both proactively and reactively adjust plans, messaging and manage relationships that may be impacted
  • Maintain strong company and life sciences sector expertise. Continually gather, monitor, and report on marketplace intelligence and inform, educate and coach company management about financial and industry trends, shareholder concerns, and competitor actions that may impact the company
  • Track Wall Street analysts’ models and estimates and compile internal quarterly consensus for multiple company stakeholders
  • Continual refinement of messaging and market positioning based on company performance, market perception, expectations, peer performance and relative valuation
  • Partner with senior leadership and work cross-functionally to support specific investor relation activities and creation of investor communications
  • Originate and maintain investor-facing materials, including financial results press releases, investor presentations, conference call scripts, Q&As, IR website and backgrounders
  • Organize and execute investor conference and events
  • Serve as an advisor to the CFO, CEO, and other senior leaders on issues involving the public distribution of financial information and other material disclosures
  • Work in close partnership with internal legal team to review IR-related external communications and related 8-K filings
  • Maintain master investor list and target communication lists; track all investor interactions
  • Develop a clear understanding of the segment mix of investor styles and needs, identify and flag inconsistencies of business strategy with investor needs
  • Plan, direct and manage all activities related to the flow of financial information between the corporation and the investors community
  • Prepare executive management for investor events and earnings calls. Accompany and support senior executives at investor conferences and be a resource for information. Own and prepare investor presentations and key investor messages by working with multiple functional groups


Candidate Profile:

  • An outstanding, highly-articulate, creative and persuasive communicator; a thought partner to the CEO and CFO and continuously strive to improve the investor story
  • A proactive, strategic approach to investor relations. Experience successfully evolving an investor relations strategy as necessary for a rapidly growing and expanding business
  • Demonstrated success in building and elevating analyst coverage in an effort of continued corporate growth
  • High-level understanding of financial statements and valuation models
  • Possess excellent verbal, interpersonal communications, and business writing skills
  • Ability to relay biology and complex scientific data to external stakeholders and must possess a strong understanding of genome sequencing
  • Existing relationships within the financial, industry analyst, media, and institutional investor communities particularly in life sciences
  • Capable of independently writing clear, concise and error-free documents. Develop complex documents such as press releases, external company presentations, annual/quarterly reports, and brochures
  • The candidate will have a strong work ethic, be a self-starter, and be able to be highly productive in a dynamic, collaborative environment. Strong attention to detail and ability to be tactical and strategic
  • Impeccable integrity and judgment skills, to be able to deal with sensitive financial information and make recommendations to the CEO and CFO
  • A combination of personality traits - collaborative, honesty, integrity, humility, passion and likes to have fun
  • Possesses an attention to detail and time-sensitivities
  • Proven ability to plan, organize and execute IR-related events
  • Knowledge of SEC and disclosure requirements preferred
  • Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science degree required, advanced degree a plus
  • Minimum 15 years’ experience in the life sciences industry with a focus on investor relations, finance, equity research or investment banking; Corporate development experience a plus
  • Public company experience required
