Job Details

Seeking experienced and innovative leader to direct Regeneron's Neuroscience team, consisting of approximately 36 dynamic researchers currently focusing on discovering and developing therapeutics for chronic pain and neurodegenerative disease.

Regeneron has a long history in neuroscience, including early efforts that resulted in the cloning and characterization of multiple growth factors. Our therapeutic focus was initially on protein factors and antibody therapeutics, but more recently we have expanded into other modalities, among which are RNA-based therapeutics that includes a close synergistic relationship with the RNA therapeutics company Alnylam. We derive novel targets and approaches from a wide variety of sources, including our high throughput mouse genetics powered by VelociGene technology, our cutting-edge transcriptomics technologies, and translationally-relevant gene associations uncovered by the Regeneron Genetics Center from large scale gene sequencing of human populations with neurological diseases or traits.

The successful candidate would direct and inspire Neuroscience's preclinical team by using their deep and broad expertise to identify targets, set strategic vision, leverage Regeneron's vast technologies to suggest novel technological approaches, and critically evaluate data and projects. The successful candidate would be expected to participate in translational activities, progressing therapeutic targets along the pipeline from early target discovery through research and into clinical development. The candidate would also participate in Regeneron's broader scientific community, participating actively in cross-functional meetings and collaborative projects and representing Regeneron's Neuroscience vision to Senior Leadership, internal and external stakeholders.

As Head of Neuroscience, a typical day might include the following:
  • Leading Regeneron's senior Neuroscience leadership team and running the broader group, providing scientific vision, inspiration, and both short-term and long-term goals. Communicating priorities, policies, and goals of Regeneron Senior Leadership to the broader Neuroscience group.
  • Identifying and establishing new strategies or technologies for identifying new targets and approaches.
  • Setting priorities and ensuring progression of, or go/no-go decisions for, targets and projects. Managing processes and procedures for moving targets from preclinical research through the development pipeline.
  • Actively participating in departmental, cross-functional, senior leadership, and external meetings to provide neuroscience expertise and to represent the goals and vision of the Neuroscience group.
  • Interacting broadly and collaboratively with other therapeutic focus areas and technology groups within the company, forging relationships and active collaborations, as well as leveraging Regeneron's broad toolbox of technologies to advance neuroscience research as a systems-level endeavor.
  • Representing Regeneron in the strategic scientific leadership of key external partnerships.
  • Identifying and mentoring the Neuroscience group, providing opportunities, visibility, and challenge to develop each group member to his/her maximum scientific and professional potential.
  • Conducting or overseeing review of neuroscience-related documents, including regulatory submissions, manuscripts, contracts, etc.

This role might be for you if:

  • You have a strong collaborative leadership style with managerial and mentorship experience and excellence
  • You are a strong communicator with the ability to communicate both science and vision

At least 10 years' experience after PhD; 20+ years desirable; a minimum of 5 years in an industry or translational setting. Possess both deep and broad expertise in the field of Neuroscience crucial. Familiarity with cutting edge technology and proven experience applying technology to neuroscience-related questions essential. Experience with administratively directing a group (managing budget and organization, etc.) essential. Exposure to drug development or similar regulated activities highly desirable. Broad network of colleagues and collaborators, strong publication record, and national/international reputation desirable.
