Within AbbVie's Comparative Medicine function, execute and provide clinical oversight including diagnosis and treatment for disease processes in research animals under area of responsibility. Also provides surgical support as needed with focus on the clinical care and maintenance of the research animals. Incorporate the 3 R's (Replacement, Refinement and Reduction) in daily decision-making for clinical cases and conduct of research-oriented activities and guidance to research. The incumbent should also monitor vendors to assure the adequacy of the health of all animals received within the facilities of the department. This position is expected to collaborate with researchers as needed to provide professional and scientific consultation for selection and development of unique animal models systems for research, testing and production operations in animal facilities under responsibility.

Major Responsibilities:
  • Responsible for providing clinical care to all research animals, facility operations and management, extensive consulting and liaison with research scientists, serving as a functional resource to Institutional Animal Care & Use Committee (IACUC), management of appointed discretionary items in functional budget.
  • Contribute to the development of the staff, encourage innovation and recognize both accomplishments and short-comings of reports in order to proactively reward or take corrective actions as necessary.
  • Monitors vendors to assure the adequacy of the health of all animals received within the facilities of the department.
  • Incorporate the 3 R's of Replacement, Refinement, and Reduction in their daily decision-making.
  • Contributes to short-term strategies of the operations aspect of Comparative Medicine and will provide leadership to the animal care staff in the daily operations of animal husbandry and facility supervision.
  • Encourage innovation through leadership, set expectations, and hold people accountable for their actions. Communicate both successes and failures and promote change, where necessary, to more effectively drive for results.

  • Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) from American Veterinary Medical Association accredited or equivalent institution is required.
  • American College of Laboratory Animal Medicine (ACLAM) board eligibility preferred.
  • Experience may include: 5 years laboratory animal experience; ACLAM board eligible with 3 years of lab animal experience, or DVM with PhD and 2-4 years animal lab experience
  • Must demonstrate good knowledge and expertise in laboratory animal medicine with technical expertise in dosing, bleeding, animal necropsies and minor surgical procedures in laboratory animals and strong clinical skills.
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills are required as well as good technical writing skills and experience.
  • This individual must demonstrate a good knowledge in laboratory animal medicine or have demonstrated strong clinical, surgical and/or specialty skills
  • Veterinary state licensure (or equivalent) is required, while specifically Illinois State licensure is preferred.
  • Demonstrate good knowledge and expertise in laboratory animal medicine.
  • Proven expertise in identifying key issues, trends, and cause/effects as they impact the business while encouraging and providing opportunities to share knowledge by providing expertise on all internal collaborations.
