Allergan Aesthetics R&D, Biological Research is seeking a highly motivated and innovative candidate for the role of Scientist, Protein Biophysical Characterization. The successful candidate for this position will work independently and contribute expertise to projects aimed at characterizing protein-based therapeutics. He/she will have a critical role in developing and conducting protein characterization strategies to select, optimize, and prioritize, therapeutic protein candidates for development. Expertise in the characterization of in vitro and cellular protein-ligand binding, as well as evaluating protein folding and stability of biologicals are a requisite. This individual will organize, analyze and interpret results, come forward with recommendations or understanding of the results, and communicate and present in team meetings and reports. The ideal candidate will be able to propose and design characterization strategies and have exceptional troubleshooting skills. Excellent communication skills and the ability seamlessly work with diverse teams to address scientific challenges on defined timelines is critical.

Knowledge and experience with surface plasmon resonance (SPR), dynamic light scattering (DLS), differential scanning fluorimetry (DSF), circular dichroism (CD), intrinsic fluorescence, size-exclusion chromatography with multi-angle light scattering are required (SEC-MALS). Experience with HPLC, UPLC, and protein expression and purification are required. Experience with cell biology and/or protein/cell interactions is desired.

The position is on the scientific track at Allergan working on complex assigned research projects. Taking input from management and/or the lead of matrixed projects, the candidate will be responsible for designing and conducting experiments to meet the needs of the program and project teams. The individual will also be responsible for interpreting the results and reporting back to management and project teams in the form of verbal presentation, slides, and written reports.

Furthermore, the position requires the individual to work with and in areas requiring select agents and Toxins access (i.e. Biosafety level 2 and biosafety level 3 laboratories). Access to and use of select agents is regulated by federal policies. Therefore, the candidate must conduct all work activities in compliance with AbbVie internal and applicable regulatory requirements. AbbVie internal requirements include compliance with ethics, environmental health and safety, financial, human resources, and general business policies, requirements and objectives.

You Will
  • Independently design and conduct complex experiments to address specific protein characteristics in a manner that reliable results are achieved in a timely manner.
  • Document and interpret results in order to reach conclusions, discuss with supervisor and/or team leader to map subsequent experiments.
  • Develop and maintain up-to-date knowledge and skill base by reviewing the literature, attending seminars and meetings.
  • Prepare technical reports, presentations, and appropriate documentation of work performed. Assist supervisor in maintaining project documentation. Attend and participate in lab, team and departmental meetings. Present data as required.
