This role leads the Vaccine Research and Development activities within the Vaccines Business Unit. It inspires scientific direction and oversees group operations including vaccine discovery, assay development, molecular biology, virology and clinical immunology activities. This role also provides leadership and support to project teams with interactions across research, CMC, clinical, regulatory, quality, and other cross-functional partners.

  • Manage a team of scientists responsible for development and characterization of vaccines in vitro, in vivo and in humans
  • Oversee and provide leadership, technical and strategic direction for the various aspects of vaccine development including:
  • New vaccine construct design and proof-of-concept characterization.
  • Assay development/qualification/validation/tech transfer
  • Nonclinical and clinical evaluation of immune response and efficacy of vaccines
  • Regulatory submissions
  • CRO Management
  • Build and strengthen the Vaccines Research and Development core technical capabilitie
  • Ensure proper staffing and resourcing. Ensure team effectiveness including setting team member expectations and providing coaching and feedback to direct reports.
  • Demonstrate strong use of core competencies with a focus on building cohesive and high performing teams, fostering resourcefulness, and engaging in healthy conflict.
  • Develop and manage group budgets.
  • Mentor and develop talent within Research and Development organization.
  • Provide Subject Matter Expertise to Emergent vaccine development programs
  • Participate in identifying and reviewing new opportunities, including preparing contract and grant proposals to secure external funding
  • Interact closely with staff in Scientific Affairs, M&A, Regulatory Affairs, QA, Clinical & Non-clinical Development, Finance, and Business Development to develop strategies, prepare budgets, and to coordinate objectives, resources, and timelines
  • Perform other duties as assigned/required

MINIMUM EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, SKILLS
  • Ph.D. in Biology, Microbiology, Immunology or related Life Sciences field
  • 15+ years of related vaccine development experience, including 10+ years of progressively responsible management experience in an industrial setting.
  • Experience with preclinical blood products/biologics product development particularly in the design and execution of nonclinical and clinical studies. Experience with assay development, assay validation, process development, and formal animal studies.
  • Familiarity with GLPs, GMPs, and GCP requirements required.
  • Strong interpersonal, oral and written communication skills including track-record of scientific expertise demonstrated through peer-reviewed publications, abstracts and presentations
  • Proven experience in problem solving, decision making, building effective teams, mentorship and leadership
