Executive Director, Mechanistic disease biology and combinations, Oncology

We are seeking a highly motivated and experienced individual with drug development and diagnostics expertise at the executive director level. This individual will lead mechanistic disease biology and combination (MDB) analyses within Research Biology. The role will be responsible for characterizing disease and therapeutic mechanism of action, developing and delivering on strategies that identify rationale-based molecular combinations and target indications for Gilead's oncology pipeline and clinical stage molecules.

The successful candidate will work within cross-functional teams to deliver data packages pairing mechanism-based analyses of drug and disease to match patients with the most appropriate therapeutic. This position will oversee the integration of these mechanistic analyses with clinical development. The executive director will be accountable for discovering and developing patient enrichment strategies, ensuring translation to practical applications in the clinical setting. The scope of responsibilities spans design, experimental execution, data analysis and interpretation to inform assays for initial patient selection and stratification strategies. The successful candidate will bring deep scientific experience with in-depth knowledge of oncology and clinical development perspective, and expertise in matrix-based management. The executive director will be a strong team player who thrives in a cross-functional environment and elevates the performance of their colleagues.

Responsibilities: Leads the MDB team and drives activities related to identification of rationale-based combinations and practical patient selection criteria for Gilead's clinical stage and oncology pipeline molecules.

Designs and drives implementation of strategy to interrogate disease pathobiology combined with mechanistic analyses of therapeutics.

Cultivates innovative thinking, working with teams across research, bioinformatics functions and other relevant functions to identify areas of novel opportunity.

Establishes strong internal collaborative teamwork and represents the MDB function on cross-functional project teams, including early and late stage development, to ensure alignment of objectives across the drug development continuum

Drives the generation of a strong KOL collaborative network and identifies key collaborations to complement Gilead's internal research efforts.

Represents the MDB function in collaborations with other industry partners and projects.

Drives the generation of high quality presentations and publications for internal and external audiences. Contributes to clinical study protocols, clinical study reports and Medical Affairs publications as appropriate.

Represents the MDB function and makes clear presentations, or leads colleagues through presentations, to senior management and project review as appropriate.

Develops and mentors a MDB team of innovative and highly motivated team players to impact Gilead's oncology drug development pipeline.

Qualifications and Experience:

Experienced PhD / MD/ MD PhD scientist with 15+ years of relevant industry experience in oncology and immuno-oncology drug development.

Deep understanding of the role of mechanistic and pathobiological analyses in drug development, and strong working knowledge of all functional areas of drug development, including research, clinical development and diagnostic development.

Ability to place practical considerations in context with research data and to make rational, risk:benefit balanced decisions in ambiguity / with incomplete information when necessary.

Experience with in vitro and in vivo cancer models, and integrating PK/PD/efficacy information

Experience working with primary human samples, including pre- and post-analytical considerations. Demonstrated experience in the appropriate application of various scientific technologies to research strategies.

Experience leading teams through hypothesis-based interrogation of multi-parametric data sets including proteomics and genomics.

Track record of excellence establishing productive collaborations with KOLs and academic institutions. Experience with business development is preferred.

A team player mindset is essential, with the ability to navigate cross-functional teams to produce results in line with Gilead's innovative objectives.

Excellent verbal and written communication skills across all levels both within an organization and with external collaborators.

Demonstrated ability to build and develop a highly functional, motivated and integrated research team.
