Job Details

The Biologics Optimization team is seeking an experienced Senior Scientist with expertise in NGS to join our team in Thousand Oaks. Biologics Optimization is a multidisciplinary team in Research with capabilities in protein engineering, cloning, expression, purification, and analysis of therapeutic proteins. The group is responsible for the engineering, production, assessment, and final selection of large molecule drug candidates that advance to Process Development.

The Senior Scientist will manage the NGS laboratory and staff, and will be responsible for execution of multiple complex NGS workflows supporting diverse partner teams. The Senior Scientist will be presented with a variety of scientific challenges, and a strong candidate will have a track record of developing and productively implementing cutting edge technologies including informatics and assays.

Position Responsibilities

Manage daily activities of NGS laboratory staff with responsibility for end-to-end delivery of NGS sequencing for multiple customer groups within Amgen Therapeutic Discovery

Work independently to optimize NGS workflows, including both wet lab and informatics, and keep current with the state of the art in sequencing technologies

Innovate and implement additional assays to support biologic drug discovery in collaboration with partner groups in Therapeutic Discovery

Build strong collaborative relationships within the company

Required Skills

NGS experience across Illumina and other sequencing platforms and preparation kits

Experience in management of laboratory staff and in independently tracking and accomplishing functional group deliverables, including excellent organizational skills

Basic experience with informatics and NGS data analysis

Proven success optimizing assays and workflows in an industrial biopharma or other setting

Preferred Skills

Advanced informatics or data science skills including computer programming, e.g., in Python or C++

Deep understanding of molecular biology, especially as applied to recombinant protein production

Experience with biophysical assays on recombinant proteins including binding assays

A track record of innovation as evidenced by patents and/or peer reviewed publications

Basic Qualifications

Doctorate degree with 2 years of scientific experience

OR

Master's degree and 5 years of scientific experience

OR

Bachelor's degree and 7 years of scientific experience

Preferred Qualifications

PhD in life sciences, chemical/biochemical engineering, or a related discipline

4 or more years of relevant post-graduate work experience in an industrial environment
