Position Overview

Nektar has an exciting opportunity for an Executive Director, Alliance Management to join their Business Development team.

The Executive Director, Alliance Management leads management of all current and future partnerships and collaborations with companies, academic and research institutions, both in the US and abroad. Alliances can comprise of preclinical research collaborations, clinical development partnerships, co-commercialization efforts, and manufacturing/supply agreements. The Alliance Management role will include all clinical collaborations and some nonclinical collaborations. It will not include management of Nektar's PEG partnerships and certain smaller nonclinical collaborations. Primary function includes ensuring that all parties adhere to contractual and governance-prescribed obligations of partnership agreements and that partners consider Nektar a professional and impeccable collaborator. This position contributes to and supports the company's research and development efforts to create high value therapeutics to address unmet medical needs.

  • Consistently works with abstract ideas or situations across functional areas of the business. Through assessment of intangible variables, identifies and evaluates fundamental issues, developing strategy and direction for major functional areas. Requires in-depth knowledge of the functional area, business strategies, and the company's goals.
  • Represent Nektar as the primary point of contact for external partners for alliance management matters.
  • Participate in governance committees to define clear partnership objectives, determine rules of engagement, outline specific activities of parties, schedule meetings, propose agendas, draft and finalize meeting minutes, etc.
  • Work with Business Development to structure and negotiate partnership agreements that are governed effectively and fairly in the best interests of all parties.
  • Monitor progress of partnering activities and ensure that execution is in accordance with timelines and within guidelines of partnership agreements.
  • Will work with Program Management to ensure cross-functional team alignment and execution in support of projects within the applicable program.
  • Develops corporate and/or organizational policies and authorizes their implementation.
  • Provides direction to senior managers in various internal functional groups to align on partnering strategy, objectives, activities, and deliverables.
  • Interacts internally and externally with executive level management, requiring negotiation of extremely critical matters. Influences policymaking.
  • Responsible for developing and maintaining relationships with strategic partners, including universities and research institutions, early-stage companies, and existing (late-stage) large pharmaceutical companies.
  • Proactively identify possible risks, manage crises that may arise, and resolve potential disputes.
  • Report on progress of alliances to senior management, including Nektar's Executive Committee.
  • Support financial analysis and long-range forecasting of financial obligations for budget planning and reporting purposes.
  • Develop and evaluate personnel to ensure the efficient operation of the function. May be responsible for providing regular performance feedback, development and coaching to direct reports.
  • Other duties as assigned.
  • A minimum of a Bachelor's degree in a scientific or business-related discipline is required. An MBA or PhD (or equivalent advanced degree) is preferred. Equivalent experience may be accepted.
  • A minimum of 18 years' experience in the biopharmaceutical, related industry or academia is required. A minimum of 15 years previous management experience is preferred. Alliance management, program management, and/or business development experience is preferred. Equivalent experience may be accepted.
  • Must be able to demonstrate an ability to lead alliance/partnership management and technical discussions internally and externally. Ideally for both clinical and commercial stage alliances.
  • An ability to work cross-functionally to develop alliance/partnership plans is required.
  • Must be experienced with and capable of explaining scientific concepts.
  • Must have demonstrated experience in exercising sound business judgment.
  • Must be able to demonstrate ability to pioneer new ideas and create new thinking.
  • Excellent communication skills both oral and written are required.
  • Must have excellent interpersonal skills with a proven ability to work across multiple functions, disciplines and people.
