The Imaging Sciences group is seeking a creative, collaborative, detailed, and highly organized Sr. Staff Scientist to help build and head a brand-new Preclinical Histology Core that will serve all therapeutic areas in Research. This core facility will use groundbreaking histotechnologies, automation, imaging instruments, and software platforms to provide full services for histology, histochemistry, immunohistochemistry (IHC), and in situ hybridization (ISH) experiments on non-human tissues. This facility will also develop novel methods to power exploratory research including highly multiplexed IHC/ISH staining techniques, 3D histology, and image data repositories to power quantitative analyses and machine learning data mining efforts.

We are looking for an individual who will collaborate with scientists, pathologists, and technology specialists across the company to understand new projects, develop scientifically rigorous experiments, and deliver high quality data and methods. This is a unique opportunity to become deeply involved in a variety of exciting and creative initiatives at a premiere biology research institute.

In this role, a typical day may include:
• Meeting with collaborators to understand programs, vetting requests based on technological suitability and coordinating with or rerouting to other technology groups as appropriate.
• Supervising PhD scientists and R&D Specialists in the coordination & execution of experiments, reviewing data, and collating results into presentations for communication.
• Coordinating day to day operations of routine histology projects, including scheduling, prioritization, capacity, timelines, and reagent inventories
• Working closely with microscopy and computational image analysis teams to develop advanced or experimental technologies
• Presenting summaries of capacity and project updates to align with other groups in Research

This role may be for you if you:
• Can adeptly identify applications of cutting-edge histotechnologies across different biological or therapeutic contexts in animal model research (for example aging, immunology, metabolism, neuroscience, and oncology)
• Enjoy working in a team environment to manage multiple collaborations and timelines
• Have outstanding critical thinking, attention to detail, scientific acuity, and strong analytical, problem solving, and troubleshooting skills
• Have a passion for biology and helping others and a dedication to share, collaborate, and lift up others

To be considered for this role, you must have a PhD+8 years of shown experience in Histology, Histotechnology, or Pathology. You must have extensive experience in basic and advanced histological techniques such as processing, embedding, and sectioning, along with histochemical, immunohistochemical, in situ hybridisation and multiplexed staining technologies. Candidates should have experience with histological robotic equipment such as the Leica BOND Rx or Ventana Discovery Ultra, the Dainippon AS-410. Proficiency in widefield & confocal microscopy as well as slide scanners such as the Aperio AT2, Leica SCN400, Zeiss Axioscan, or similar is required. Candidates should be comfortable and experienced with quantitative image analysis software, including HALO, Zen, ImageJ, or otherwise. Extensive knowledge of vertebrate anatomy, animal phenotyping, and animal model validation across diverse therapeutic contexts is required. Past experience with integrated hardware and software platforms is highly recommended.
